Senior School Sport &

Co-curricular

Mr Joe Priest, Director of Co-curricular & HOD of Sport

It has been another fantastic week in the cocurricular department. The daily reveal for the musical has continued with a lot of great musicals taken off the board. Miss Alex Dunkley has displayed a great poker face and is keeping any hints or information to herself.

What a week!

A couple of well-known local ex-students have been busy in their chosen pursuits.

Phoebe Litchfield has had an absolute break out season for the Sydney Thunder. She finished the tournament with 280 runs, which included two fifties. The reward for this has been selection into the Australian T20 squad to tour India. What an amazing achievement and I know the whole school community will be tuning in to watch her debut game.

Congratulations must also go to ex-student Jason Belmonte. He finished runner up in the individual World Cup Ten Pin Bowling final yesterday. Whilst he was disappointed not to win, he has another chance at a World Cup win in the team event competing for Australia. Another outstanding achievement from arguably the world's best in his chosen sport.

It has also been a busy week in the sporting department. Our rowers all went off to compete in the first regatta for the season. It became very clear that all the hard work they have put in has been well worth it. Some excellent results can be seen in the report below.

Congratulations to our cricketers who have had a spectacular week. Jamie Anderson had a great weekend scoring an unbeaten 119* on Saturday in Centenary Cup. What an amazing achievement. Not to be outdone the 1st XI played in Round 2 of the Douglas Shield on Monday against Penrith Anglican College. Harry Priest 146 & Charlie Tink 97 combined for a mammoth partnership to help KWS post 319 off their 50 overs. In response Charlie Anderson had the opposition confused with his leg spin claiming 5 wickets for the innings. A fantastic win.

Cricket Report

Week 8 Term 4

Throughout weeks 5 and 6, it was pleasing to see some normality return to our cricket program. With the sun becoming more present, training and fixtures were able to recommence in full swing. It has been fantastic to be able to watch our students compete in their fixtures, always playing hard but fair. Over the past fortnight, Kinross Wolaroi has hosted four Schools for our various representative competitions. In the Dale McIntosh Trophy T20, we will play James Sheehan High after a nail biting super-over win against Orange High. On Thursday, our Wiburd Shield (U15s) team will face off against William Clarke College on main oval in Round 3, while the 1st XI will take on Pacific Hills Christian School in Round 3 of the Douglas Shield. Good luck to all players involved.

There have also been some further selections in representative teams for our local regions. Please join me in congratulating the following players on their selection:

Ben Brazier – Orange u14 and Central West u13

Oliver Garard – Orange u14 and Central West u13

Henry Luelf – Orange u14

Harry Miller - Orange u14

Charlie O’Brien – Orange u14 and Central West u14

Fletcher Byrne - Central West u14

Finally, I wish to thank all those parents who offer their assistance to coaches over the weekends. Be it scoring, umpiring or just and offer of assistance, it is greatly appreciated by our staff.

Good luck this week.

Reports:

1st XI vs Spring Hill

With the sky looking ominous, Spring Hill won the toss and sent Kinross Wolaroi into bat. A promotion up the order saw Prowse and Pengilly open the batting with good intent until Pengilly was caught and bowled for 25. This brought Shepherd to the crease who took the game on and created an attacking partnership with Prowse until after drinks when Prowse was run out for 67. Tink entered and was dismissed for a duck bringing Priest to the crease. Some quality running between the wickets and powerful hitting saw these two put on 100 runs in 8 overs until Priest got caught taking the game on for 49 in the last over. Condon joined Shepherd for the last 4 balls and Kinross Wolaroi finished with 228 runs, Shepherd finishing on 55* and Condon 1*.

With lost overs due to weather, it saw a reduced batting innings for Spring Hill with 127 needed from 22 overs. This saw an unfortunate outcome for us after putting on a good total in their innings but knew they needed tight bowling and good fielding to give them a chance. Priest and Prowse opened the bowling with good areas and an early wicket from Prowse. Liam McKenzie and Tom Patton then came onto bowl continuing the tight areas and good team fielding with McKenzie picking up a needed wicket. A Baldwinson and Priest came onto try and finish the inning Baldwinson finishing up with 3 wickets however Kinross’ good bowling and fielding wasn’t enough to get the win in the reduced game against Spring Hill picking up their first loss for the season.

1st XI vs Gladstone

Kinross Wolaroi won the toss elected to bat first on what would be the first game on Main Oval for the season. Waterson and Pengilly opened the batting showing some early patience and content with some good Gladstone bowling. Waterson the held out to the deep for a well-made 19, this brought Shepherd to the crease who continued the run scoring with Pengilly. Shepherd unfortunately fell for a well-made 24. Pengilly tying down one end saw contributions from Priest, Brazier and Condon with Pengilly unfortunately falling just before end of innings for a well made 57 and his first career 50. This saw Kinross Wolaroi scoring 128 defending 129 for the win.

We then went in to bowl and were opened by Harry Priest from one end and Joe Priest from the other. Harry took 1/17 off 4 while Joe took 0/16 off 5. This got us off to a very competitive start as Gladstone were now feeling the pressure and began to swing. Tom Patton replaced Harry and a fiery spell resulted in figures of 3/14 off 6 to put us in the box seat, with a spectacular throw from Liam McKenzie from the boundary for a direct hit runout. McKenzie took the other end and put the pressure on well with some excellent swing bowling (0/13), allowing Baldwinson (2/11) and Anderson (2/17) to clean up the tail. Credit also goes to Shepherd and Brazier for an excellent piece of teamwork to run out Gladstones Ben McAlpine cheaply. Well done to Kinross Wolaroi for consistent energy and clean fielding.

U14 Sixers v Cavaliers

The Sixers dismissed Cavaliers for 81 but were unable to chase down the runs and were dismissed for 69 in the 26th over of their innings.

Despite the disappointing defeat there were some bright spots for the Sixers.

Digby Connell Hewett (3 for 10 from 4 overs), Sid Weston (2 for 7 from 3 overs), Henry Luelf (2 for 9 from 3 overs) and Phoebe Johnston (1 for 9 from 4 overs), Charlie O’Brien (1 for 7 from 3 overs) and Jack Whiteley (1 for 8 from 3 overs) all bowled well and did not allow the Cavaliers batting line up easy runs.

On the other hand Cavaliers kept fighting as shown by the way that they recovered from 6 for 41 at drinks to make their way to a defendable 81.

The Sixers innings featured some good batting from Phoebe Johnston (11) and Charlie O’Brien (9) but wickets fell at crucial times (especially just before and after drinks) and the late order batsmen were unable to deal with the pressure as wickets began to fall with the total in sight.

This was a case of what might have been for the Sixers but we will learn from the experience – even tighter bowling would have helped (Cavaliers only scored 59 runs from the bat but were given an overly generous number of wides and no-balls) and there was no need for panic with the bat considering the score was 4 for 41 at drinks meaning that there were 15 overs available to score 40 runs and the Sixers had six wickets in hand.

Thanks to all parents for their support and help on the day.

Coach

U14 Sixers v Orange City Warriors

The Sixers played with great spirit but were unable to defeat Orange City on Saturday.

The Sixers won the toss but skipper Fletcher Byrne made the decision to send City in to bat. City responded by putting together 137 for 6 from their 30 overs. Bowling wise Digby Connell Hewlett (2 for 26 from 5 overs), Henry Luelf (1 for 21 from 5 overs), Phoebe Johnston (1 for 28 from 4 overs) and Fletcher Byrne (0 for 14 from 5 overs) all impressed with the way that they stuck to their respective tasks.

In reply, the Sixers came close to chasing the target down finishing on 117 for 8 when the overs ran out. Henry Luelf (6) Fletcher Byrne (15), Charlie O’Brien, (15) Ollie Garard (20) and Digby Connell Hewlett (26) all acquitted themselves well. Henry and Fletcher saw off the new ball and were close to building a meaningful partnership before being dismissed. Charlie batted with a great deal of application and when Ollie joined him at the wicket it looked as if their contrasting approaches would see the Sixers home. As Charlie held up his end Ollie began to take the initiative away from the City bowlers with some enterprising strokeplay. Unfortunately he was dismissed when in full flight. Digby then took over and also played with a lot of aggression. As the overs and balls ran out Tom Mason also played impressively for a run a ball 12.

It is very difficult to win Saturday morning cricket batting second. There have been many instances of teams winning after batting first and scoring 117 but there have been very, very few examples of teams batting second and scoring 138 to win. The fact that the Sixers were able to get within touching distance to this total is a credit to them and they will be a better team for the experience.

Thanks to Mr Mason and Mr Johnston for their help with umpiring and scoring duties. This was much appreciated. Thanks also to all the other Sixers parents for their support and encouragement.

U14 Thunder v Orange CYMS Gold

On a brisk Saturday morning, the Thunder won the bat flip and elected to bat first. Getting off to a steady start Ben Brazier and Lucas Vickery saw off the new bowlers comfortably. Soon after both openers and 1st drop Sam Knox had departed to a good spell of bowling, bringing Reggie Staniforth and Hugh Perry to the crease. Both batsmen showed great patience to rebuild the innings, before Max Lawson provided late runs through some power hitting and hard running between the wickets. The Thunder posting a modest 74 for the CYMS batters to chase.

The bowling innings got off to a fine start, with great energy in the field backing up some tight bowling by openers Flynn Helyar and Max Lawson. A fantastic grab in the deep by James Berryman gave Max Lawson and the Thunder their first, before Ben Brazier held another catch to have the visitors 2 down at drinks. Sam Knox came on and bowled a great spell, taking 2 wickets, however the CYMS batters were too strong on the day, chasing the total 4 down.

Thanks to Mr. Vickery for offering to score on the day, and well done to the Thunder on a performance holding plenty of positives moving forward.

Rowing

Kinross Wolaroi Rowing travelled to Sydney on the weekend to compete in their first regatta of the season, the Independent Schools Championships. The squad consisting of 91 rowers supported by 11 staff performed very well against some strong competition from Sydney, Canberra and wider NSW.

Special mention to our Year 9 quads (current Year 8 students) who, in their first ever regatta, won both the Year 9 girls and boys 1st quad divisions. We look forward to seeing this special group develop as they continue their learning in rowing.

KWS ISA Tennis report – Round 4

KWS was lucky enough to host another round of the ISA competition in Orange last weekend. This time KWS was up against Scots All Saints College (SASC). Unfortunately SASC had a few players missing from their team but this didn’t stop a great weekend of tennis being played. The KWS Odds team were up against the SASC Evens team and our students shone in both their singles and doubles. Similarly, our KWS Evens team showed humility in their convincing win over the SASC Odds team. Both KWS teams came away with an 18-0 win over their SASC competitors, which is a terrific result.

A special mention goes to Oscar Zielinski for his debut in the ISA tennis team. Oscar missed out on his singles, but won his singles which is a great start.

KWS Tennis report – Round 5

KWS travelled to Bathurst this week to complete against St Stanislaus’ College (SSC) for the ISA competition. As usual, our ISA team was ready and raring to go for another day of competitive singles and doubles matches. The KWS Odds team got off to a strong start, winning all their singles matches quite comfortably. The KWS Evens team had their work cut out for them against the SSC Odds team. Every match was down to the wire with close singles and doubles matches. The KWS Odds came away with a win 15 sets to 2 and similarly the KWS Evens also had a victory with a close score of 10 sets to 8.

A special mention goes to Charlie Poole and Hayden McKenzie for their debut in the ISA team. Both boys had great wins in their singles and helped their teams consolidate a win so well-done boys.

Touch Football

KWS DIV 1

KWS 1 had a great game against Scots All Saints on Saturday, coming away with the win 9-6. All team members were feeling the pressure as the game began however Lilly Clarke quickly kicked off the scoring with an awesome try as she caught the defence off guard. However, it didn’t take long for Scots All Saints to even the scoreboard as their speed got them across the line. Not long after, our very talented link Charlotte Ivey took advantage of some space on the left edge, granting her a brilliant try. As the heat started to take its toll, Scots All Saints were able to score a few more tries, putting them in front 5-3 at half time. A very uplifting chat at half time from our coach Joel seemed to kick our team into gear as we opened up the scoring for the 2nd half with Lilly Clarke scoring again. Amaya Shipp’s consistent effort and strong running game was crucial in helping us level the score. Playing up for our team, both Lucy Robb and Claudia Mason showed outstanding skill as their defence kept Scots All Saints away from the try line. As our team worked hard together, we were able to bag a few more tries, resulting in the final score of 9-6. The win was definitely a team effort and couldn’t have been done without the help of our coach. It was a great game and our team is very pleased with the improvements we are seeing each week.

KWS 8 (DUCKS)

Kinross Junior Ducks played SPY8 this weekend at Maroubra.

Claudia Staniforth scored a try after an awesome break. Issy Brennan stepped multiple spy players before scoring a try. Alloway Whittle crossed the try line for three tries, while Lucy Baldwin scored a whopping four tries! Izzy Grout had a spectacular full field run, but unfortunately had butter on her hands at the last moment, resulting in a dropped ball. Maggie and Amy tagged-teamed passes resulting in a superb assist. Emme held her own in defence, not letting Spy through any gaps. Lulu made space and consistently got through gaps and made good runs.

The girls voted Lucy Baldwin as MVP this match, well done Lucy.

The ducks walked away with a win 9-3, congratulations girls.

Triathlon Report

Congratulations to Will Ward, George Hogg and Luca Telfer. All three successfully completed an advanced cycling assessment and have been certified for draft-legal racing.

This weekend coming is our main competition of the term. On Saturday and Sunday the KWS Triathlon Team will compete in a number of races including the Triathlon NSW & ACT draft-legal Super Sprint Championships and Mixed Relay Championships.

In preparation for the big weekend ahead the team attended the Orange Triathlon Club Twilight Series last Friday evening. Students competed in three mini triathlons – 50m swim, 4.4km, 800m run (repeated three times with a short rest in between). Students also tested out our new tow floats, an added safety option for swimming in open water. Our new KWS Trisuit uniform is also now available and looked very smart indeed.

All action shots taken by Justin Stent – photographer.

Water Polo

KWS Mantas vs Orange Waterdragons – Lost 7-3

The Mantas went up against Orange Water dragon's and put on an exceptionally good defense. The Water Dragons scored first, however were taken aback by the strength of some of our players. The result was a loss of 7-3. The Mantas should be immensely proud of the defense the put up and the goals that they scored against a more experienced team.

KWS Kingfish vs Flounders – Lost 15-2

Our game against the Flounders commenced at 7 o'clock, the first time this season that the Kingfish have had a full team of their own players. We started off strong in the first quarter, only conceding 2 goals with Will Taylor as keeper. The 3rd and second quarter also saw some excellent keeping from Tom Storer, making some spectacular saves, and keeping the score to a reasonable level. We finished strong in the final quarter, with Mack Johnston and Julian Connan scoring a goal each. The final score was 15-2 Flounders way. Overall, it was an enjoyable game.

KWS Killer Whales

On Thursday the KWS killer whales played against the KWS Mantas with the Killer whales winning 7-3. The first quarter Reggie Staniforth scored twice with one of them from halfway, the 2nd quarter Reggie and Georgia Clunas both made excellent shots, the third quarter Tom Tink and Chloe Provost both scored and in the final quarter Reggie scored again. The game was close, and the other team put up a great defense.
