Year 2 Reptile incursion
Kari D'Aulerio, Savi Anderson and Arya Choksi, Year 2
As part of Science Week, we recently had a reptile incursion where we got the chance to meet many amazing animals.
I felt really excited at first and it was a really cool experience for me to have. Kari
First, we saw an animal called Sandy who was like a possum. There aren’t many more of Sandy’s breed left in the world. We got to pat her, and it felt like a really soft carpet.
Second, we saw a Tawny frogmouth bird that looked like an owl. It pooped on Sebastian, the person who was telling us about the animals!
After that, we saw a turtle that was the size of our palm. We got to stroke its shell.
My favourite animal was the turtle because it was really cute. Savi
Next, we saw a two-headed lizard. It actually didn’t have eyes on the other end of its body. This is to help the animal to camouflage! Then, we saw a frilled neck lizard, and after that, a small snake called Evie. Some people put Evie on their arm, while others placed her around their necks, even the teachers!
Next, we saw a huge and heavy snake called Olivia. As a group, we got to hold her on the tummy with two hands. It freaked some students out when she breathed!
Finally, we saw a saltwater crocodile. It can grow up to six to seven metres long! It was so spikey and prickly. To keep us all safe, its mouth was shut with sticky tape so it wouldn’t bite us. It was five years old.
All the animals were really gentle, and it was a cool experience to touch them. Arya
Years 5 to 7 Tournament Of Minds Competition
Tania Whitehead, Talent Development & Enrichment Coordinator
Congratulations to our Years 5 to 6 and Year 7 Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams who recently competed at Deakin University. TOM is an international problem-solving program for Junior and Senior School students.
Teams are required to solve two demanding, open-ended challenges - one spontaneous and one long-term. Being involved in TOM supports the development of critical thinking; promotes creative and divergent thinking; stimulates a spirit of inquiry; and fosters cooperative learning and teamwork.
Our Years 5 to 6 TOMs team worked hard to produce a 10-minute presentation based on a Social Science Challenge, and our Year 7 team competed in the STEM category. The Years 5 to 6 team received Honours and placed in the top 10% of the teams who competed in the competition. What a wonderful result!
Congratulations to both our teams for their hard work and participation!
Years 5 to 8 Mario Kart Tournament
Recently, a crack team of Year 5 to 8 students ventured to The FUSE Cup's Melbourne South Division Mario Kart tournament.
Competing against 11 other teams - totalling 48 drivers - our students gave it their best. They had a blast, but kudos to Silverton Primary School who were crowned the champs on the day.
A special shout-out to Year 5 students, Nico Ho and Rocky Johnston, who were awarded MVPs!
The FUSE Cup provides school students with safe, face-to-face, competitive esports opportunities while promoting concepts such as digital wellbeing, inclusion and values.
