Fungi Town Caravan at NPS

NPS was so fortunate to have the opportunity to host artist Kathy Holowko with her amazing Fungi Town caravan for the day on Thursday. Kathy gave a presentation about fungi and showed us photos of fungi she had taken from the Macedon forest. Students then made fungi out of newspaper and masking tape which were coloured with oil pastels.

Several students also contributed to a page to an artist's book that Kathy is making, about the storm event.

An aspect of the fungi workshop was to highlight the role fungi play in the growth of trees and plants and the symbiotic relationship they have. The students learnt about how mycelium, part of fungi, usually grow underground and communicate with tree roots, helping them to grow. Another fact the students were told was that the actual mushroom is the fruiting body of fungi.

The event is sponsored by Macedon Ranges Shire Council's Storm Recovery initiative.
