Assistant Principal's Report

Leasyl Richards - Curriculum

21st February

NUDE FOOD

Our first Nude Food day for 2020 is next Wednesday 26th February. We encourage all parents to help us on this day with aiming to ensure lunch boxes are Rubbish Free.

SUSTAINABILITY

This week we have introduced Soft Plastics to our Sustainability practices at Wheelers Hill.

Each classroom now has a blue bucket which children can use for Soft Plastics instead of throwing these items in the rubbish bin which ends up in landfill.

Soft plastics are then recycled into  plastic products such as outdoor furniture, signage etc

CLASSROOM HELPERS

Wheelers Hill Primary School is strongly committed to building important relationships between school and home. An integral part of our literacy program is parental assistance. Classroom teachers value the help of parents to enable them to provide high quality teaching and learning programs.

As part of our Literacy program, WHPS offers a Classroom Helpers session for parents. This session will focus on all aspects of Literacy - Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  It will be facilitated by myself and Wendy Jarvis our Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) Learning Specialist.

The session will give an insight into the types of activities that are part of our literacy program, the procedures involved in assisting, as well as relevant questions and prompts to support students and encourage them to extend their skills and strategies. We will also focus on our MSL approach.  This will provide insight into the theory behind our approach and the types of activities we undertake in our classrooms.

This program is not compulsory for those who would like to help out in classrooms but is worthwhile for those who would like basic skills and strategies in effectively helping small groups and individual children as they begin their literacy journey.  While the knowledge and skills gained are valuable for supporting classroom teachers they also provide insights into helping your own children at home.

If you have already participated in a session in previous years you are not required to participate again.

This program will run in the Library on Wednesday 4th March from 9.00am- 10.30am.

If you are unable to participate in the morning session we also repeat the session on Wednesday 4th March from 6.30pm-8.00pm.

If you would like to participate please RSVP by 3.30 pm on

Wednesday 26th February to: richards.leasyl.a@edumail.vic.gov.au

Include your name and your child/ children’s names and grades on the email and whether you will be attending the morning or evening session.

Unfortunately, I need to request that no toddlers are brought to the sessions.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

In August 1st 2017 amendments were made to the Working with Children Act. The Act now states that even if a person’s contact with children as part of child-related work is supervised by another person, they will still need a Working with Children check.

Wheelers Hill Primary School’s  Working with Children Check policy states that we require any person undertaking volunteer work at our school to have a valid Working with Children check. This includes helping out in the classroom, participating in working bees, accompanying classes on excursions, helping at disco’s etc.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

  • If you are volunteering at Wheelers Hill Primary and already have a Working With Children Check can you please present it to the School Office where they will take a photocopy and your name will be added to the School register.
  •  If you don’t have a valid Working with Children check you can fill the form in online and lodge it at Australia Post. The link to the website is provided below for you convenience.

http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/applications/apply+for+a+check/apply+in+victoria

Working With Children Checks are free for volunteers.

People who are exempt from holding a working with Children Check are:

  • Student volunteers (e.g. work experience students)
  • Registered Teachers who have a permission to teach from the Victorian Institute of Teaching
  • Police Officers
  • Visitors to the School (e.g. grandparents who visit the school for Grandparents Morning Teas, visitors who come to watch Assembly) The decision on which events require a Working with Children Check is made by the authority of the Principal.
