Nazareth Fantasy Football:

The race for the title is heating up as we enter the final third of the Premier League campaign. Joseph Martino has continued to keep his lead but with Mr McAleer yet to use his Triple Captain option, he may well be caught in the final weeks.

Local Clubs in the Community

Nazareth College has begun hiring out their soccer pitch to clubs in the local community which will be of great benefit in preparation for the season ahead. Brandon Park, Noble Hurricanes and Lyndale United are some of the teams who have used the grounds for training and games and we look forward to having many more clubs use our developing facilities.

As the Junior season gets underway it is a great opportunity to join a new club or of course renew your registration with your existing one. Many clubs are looking for Junior players to fill their underage teams and welcome players of all abilities. If you would like to know more about clubs in the local area please contact me.

Victor Junior Badminton Oceania Championships

Last week I competed in the Victor Junior Badminton Oceania Championships and the team events that came later in the week. I represented Australia and we came first overall out of 7 other countries (New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, Tahiti, Cook Islands, Samoa). It was a great experience for me as I was the youngest in the team. We won the finals 3 matches to 2 against New Zealand in a nail-biting tie. During the individuals I was able to make quarter finals for girls doubles and singles. This was an amazing trip held at MSAC and I can’t wait to attend more International tournaments! :))

Mini Vinnies Easter Raffle

To the Nazareth Community,

The St Vincent de Paul College Conference is back and, after the summer holidays, we are all feeling energised and ready to kick off our 2019 projects! Hence, we will be running our annual Easter Raffle this term and we will be needing the support of each and every one of you to ensure this year’s fundraising efforts are even greater than our tremendous total of $600 in 2018. As usual, all money raised will go to the St Anthony’s Tutoring Program (Noble Park). St Anthony’s is one of our feeder schools who offer a free tutoring program after school for their students in order to provide them with the extra assistance needed to reach, and exceed, their potential. We anticipate that the Nazareth community will once again help us in our fundraising efforts by either

  • Donating Easter eggs to help us create amazing hampers OR
  • by purchasing a raffle ticket (or several) so that you might WIN one of the many delicious Easter hampers.

The Mini Vinnies group look forward to your SUPPORT and working with all of you in making this year's Easter Raffle the most successful one yet!

The Flying Bookworm Theatre Company: Shakespeare

As part of the Year 10 English course, each year 10 student will be studying one of Shakespeare’s works; The Merchant of Venice, or Romeo and Juliet. To help prepare them for their study of Shakespeare, The Flying Bookworm Theatre Company were kind enough to perform brief scenes and monologues from some of Shakespeare’s most famous works, and present interesting facts about his life from all those years ago. Through a mix of tragic and hilarious excerpts from a range of Shakespeare’s plays, the Year 10s were able to see these characters and scenes performed in front of them, rather than read them out of a book, and grasp a greater understanding of what Shakespeare was truly trying to convey through his plays, making them truly appreciate what a talented writer he was.

Despairing scenes from Romeo and Juliet turned comedic as these actors showed how deceiving Shakespeare’s writing style can really be. The year 10s were able to see how Shakespeare weaved different genres of writing into one piece, creating a truly captivating play, and discover theories about aspects of his life and his works.

Watching your peers get on stage and join in the acting is always fun to see, and a few of the year 10s were lucky enough to do so. Two got the chance to portray some of the magical witches from Macbeth, while others were able to re-enact tragic excerpts from Romeo and Juliet. While it was a challenge for them to get into character and act out scenes with only minutes of prior notice, they all did a wonderful job and it was very entertaining to watch.

Overall, this incursion was really quite interesting and very enjoyable. It gave all the year 10s a chance to fully appreciate Shakespeare’s work for more than just a text studied in school, and develop techniques to help them throughout their study this year.

Year 7 Information Night

On the 12th of February we welcomed our Year 7 families to our final Information Evening. We began the night with a sausage sizzle where families were able to meet and greet their child's pastoral teacher and Head of House. It was fantastic to see the great attendance we had and the many conversations that were taking place. It is always a very valuable event, for both parents and staff to meet and to share important information about the child. From the cafe, we moved to the more formal part of the evening in the Auditorium. The question, 'What do Year 7 parents need to know?' was addressed. Information on camp, immunisations, PAM, live reporting, student progress meetings, just to name a were covered. Following this, each of our Year 7 students were formally welcomed to the College by being presented with their Nazareth College badge from College Principal Mr Sam Cosentino. It was fantastic to see so many proud faces accept their badge and also to see them wearing their badge on their College blazer. You are all representing the College in such a positive manner! We are so very glad to have you at Nazareth College.

Year 7 Mini Olympics

On the 20th of February, the Year 7 cohort participated in a house Mini Olympics event. This gave the Year 7 students an opportunity to join together with their house, build house spirit and also to get to know each other a little better. Students participated in a range of events including sack race, vortex throw, quoits, shuttle run and also a lap-a-thon. Students also had the option of participating in an art activity that saw them interpret an instruction and create a visual piece of work.

The event could not have run smoothly if we didn't have the assistance of some exceptional Year 8 students and staff. Big thank you to Ms Fiona James, Ms Emily Bryan, Mr Chris Seel, Ms Mirella Venturini, Ms Kate Shea, Mr Jason Robert, Mr Andrew Holten and Ms Mary Green.

Final scores were as follows:

1st - McAuley - 128pts

2nd - Knox - 122pts

3rd - Chisholm - 115pts

4th - Mannix - 112pts

5th - MacKillop - 111pts

6th - McCormack - 89pts

Congratulations to all Year 7s. You all participated with big smiles, a great amount of enthusiasm, sportsmanship and house spirit! It was fantastic to see the amount of support and encouragement these students have for each other already.
