Magis

Congratulations to the World Scholars, Tournament of Minds and Opti-MINDS teams on representing the College with distinction over the past week.
All members of the World Scholar's teams performed very well in Melbourne in this amazing international event which involved 1600 contestants from 27 different countries over the 5 days. Three of our teams, one senior and two junior have qualified for the Tournament of Champions in Yale, USA later this year, a splendid achievement. Oscar Hegge (Junior) and Emily Tyson (Senior) were our top performing individual students in these sections, whilst our junior team 341 (Oscar Hegge, Caitlin Green and Grace Barbour) finished 22nd and senior team 221 (Ben Linsten, Alex Panther and Emily Tyson) finished 35th overall, outstanding in a total field of over 530 teams. A most notable performance was the third place overall in the Junior debating (against nearly 300 rival teams from around the world) by the team of McKenzie Richardson, Gabriel Kaye and Skye MacMillan. Overall the four John XXIII College teams won a total of 40 gold and 28 silver medals, a superb effort. The full report in booklet form and PDF has been circulated. Congratulations to members of all four John XXIII College teams, and warmest thanks to Ms Lisa Martella, Ms Milissa Jagers and Ms Stacy Tyson for their wonderful efforts assisting the students in Melbourne. This Magis Tour included a number of other highlights including Mamma Mia at the Princess Theatre, an AFL game between Richmond and Essendon at the MCG, a visit to ACMI including the superb Alice in Wonderland Exhibition, the Victorian Art Gallery, the amazing Eureka Skydeck, and of course Melbourne City shopping.
The Year 7’s became the first John XXIII College Team to compete in the Opti-MINDS Gifted and Talented competition at Curtin University on Saturday. Jenna Whiston, Leila Barker, Aurelle Vidyagiri, Quin Binet and Conor McCormick put on a really creative, entertaining performance. There were a huge number of students involved, and news about whether the team reaches the WA finals will be released after Opti-MINDS Regional finals over the next two weekends. Our two John XXIII Tournament of Minds teams
have reached their WA finals.
Round three of the chess began this week, whilst our nominations for the British Parliamentary debating have now be confirmed, and three senior teams will represent the College next Sunday at All Saints College

Magis Camp - Point Walter
The Ignatian Tradition of striving for the Magis (the more) is embedded in all our learning areas and has a special focus in our John XXIII College Magis Gifted and Talented Program. One of the many new ventures in the Magis program this year to maximise the education opportunities for gifted students at John XXlll College was the recent Magis Camp at Point Walter, where highlights included outstanding presentations from directors of Alpha Motivation and W.A. Creative Edge Thinking, both experts in the motivation of secondary students.
