Tournament of Minds 2018
Congratulations to both John XXIII College teams who qualified for this year’s State finals to be held at Edith Cowan University on Sunday 9 September. The teams performed brilliantly at the Regional finals on Saturday 25 August and the result is a just reward to all team members and facilitators on their fantastic efforts, team work, respect and total enthusiasm that they demonstrated during the weekend. There is more to the story than time and space will allow so please wait for the yearbook entry!
A big thank you to Miss Farley and Mr Connellan for the time in facilitating the two teams and to staff and families for their welcome support on Saturday and let’s see some strong support on 9 September!
Miss Farley’s Social Science team will compete against Esperance SHS and Georgiana Molloy Anglican School and Mr Connellan’s STEM team will compete against two Sacred Heart teams and Kalgoorlie-Boulder CHS, for a place in the National Finals.
There were over 73 schools entered in this year’s competition and from these schools there 70 Secondary teams across four disciplines.
Please join me in wishing both teams well as they head towards the state finals.

Languages Week
'Learning a foreign Language, and the culture that goes with it, is one of the most useful things that we can do to broaden the empathy, imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children.' (Michael Gove)
This week we celebrated the cultural and linguistic diversity of our community and celebrated learning languages with a range of fun and engaging activities with the students. Our Year Sevens had a great time participating in the Tour de France; many of our Year Eights celebrated with a taste of Japan, Italy or France whilst competing in the Education Perfect Noongar Language Competition in which John XXIII College was ranked first in the world(!) for a short period.
Year Nines were treated to International Language Quiz Competition and Year Tens played a range of traditional games such as boules from France, carte from Italy and kendama from Japan. The Year Elevens and Twelves continued to work hard whilst munching on an obento.
Big thanks to the Language Team for their brilliant, inventive and imaginative activities.

Year 11 Politics and Law Excursion
This Tuesday was the Year 11 Politics and Law Excursion. In the morning, students travelled to the District Court and had a private audience with Honourable Judge Levy which was then followed by watching a high profile criminal trial. Students then made their way to the Magistrates Court where they witnessed a video conferencing trial.
In the afternoon, students visited Parliament House and got a chance to sit in the Legislative Assembly. Students were then permitted to watch the opening of the Legislative Council where they could observe the real day to day running of Parliament. Member for Cottesloe, Dr David Honey was kind enough to put on some light refreshments and students were given token ‘Parlia-mints’, the pun was much appreciated. A memorable excursion which students found very rewarding.

Canteen update
Please see the attached Summer Canteen Menu, which is available for Term 4.
There has been a very small price increase on a couple of items.
We are making the transition to use sustainable and eco-friendly packaging for most, and hopefully all the food we produce in our kitchen, at school. These do come at a higher cost, but we do feel it is necessary and important to play our part in looking after the planet. The students and staff can help us, by having their own re-useable straws.
We thank you for your continued support and look forwards to being of service to you.
