YEAR 10 CAREERS

As part of the Year 10 Curriculum all Year 10 students will complete 2 lessons of Careers per cycle in 2014. These lessons will give all students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the workforce and explore career options. This program has been implemented and developed to help all students move to the next phase in life – whether it is employment or further education. In 2014 Careers in Year 10 will focus on the following areas

· Post School Pathways – Work, TAFE, University, School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships, TVET, part time work, GAP year

· Career Exploration

· Understanding of Self – strengths, goals, values, attitudes, skills, experiences, accomplishments, interests

· Resume Writing

· Job Application Skills

· Job Interview Skills

· Workplace Health and Safety

· Subject Selection – Year 10 → Year 11

· Work Experience – preparation and placement for 1 week of compulsory work experience. The compulsory week of work experience dates are: Monday 23rd June – Friday 27th June

CSU WAGGA MYDAY ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK

Charles Sturt University will be holding a MyDay Arts, Psychology and Social Work event in Wagga Wagga on Friday 21 March 2014.

This event is targeted at small groups of Year 11 and Year 12 students who may be considering study in the Bachelor of Arts, Psychology and Social Work fields.

Interested students need to collect a registration form from the Careers Office and return it to school by 13th March

UNSW SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING WORK EXPERIENCE

The UNSW AUSTRALIA School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEN) in conjunction with its Industry Advisory Committee will be holding a work experience program to promote engineering career options to high school students. The program will be run during Week 9 of Term 2: from Monday 23rd June to Friday 27th June 2014, and will be available to Year 10 students across NSW. The program will allow students to experience engineering projects firsthand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, namely:

• Coastal and Port Infrastructure

• Structures and Design

• Construction and Project Management

• Water, Wastewater and Environment

• Road, Transport and Geotechnical Engineering

• Surveying and Geospatial Engineering

Daily field trips will be led by UNSW CVEN staff supported by engineering professionals to a

range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington campus. Students selected for the program will be required to meet daily at 8.50am, at Central Station, with each day of the program finishing

at approximately 4pm at UNSW. Students must attend the full five day program.

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY: APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

Juniors: Mon 14th & Tue 15th April; Seniors: Wed 16th & Thu 17th April.

These workshops are run by Sydney’s leading choreographers & dance teachers, including Jason Winters (So You Think You Can Dance), Loredo Malcolm (The Lion King), Manuel Oliveira (The Voice USA), Amy Campbell (King Kong The Musical) and more.

CSIRO WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS

HONEYWELL ENGINEERING CAMP 2013

From the 1st-6th of December last year I had the privilege of attending the 2013 Honeywell engineering summer school. This program brought together 100 Year 11 students from across NSW and ACT, with the aim of giving a better understanding of what engineering is and how it works in everyday life, as well as granting us the opportunity and ability to visit engineering universities to aid in our selection of university.

Throughout this week we attended many lectures and hands on demonstrations at a variety of universities including; the University of NSW, University of Technology, Sydney; University of Sydney; University of Western Sydney; Macquarie University; and the University of Wollongong. Along with these university visits we also experienced a variety of site visits which included; Honeywell; Weir Minerals, RAAF Base, ANSTO, BlueScope Steel, Barangaroo and WesTrac.

Another great opportunity provided during this week was a careers evening held at our accommodation at Macquarie University. This enabled us to meet and talk informally to a broad range of individuals from a variety of engineering fields, this I found to be the most valuable experience of the week.

Thanks to the Honeywell Engineering School I was able to consolidate my career direction, which would have been difficult without this experience. I would recommend this to anyone considering engineering as a career and would like to gain clear insight into the vast opportunities that engineering offers in many fields.
