Writing

Students will be given daily opportunities to write. They will continue to have choice over their own topics, paper and materials. They will be expected to follow the 5 stages of writing (Rehearsing, Composing, Revising, Editing and Publishing) to complete a writing piece. Students are encouraged to write the high frequency words we have on our Word Wall automatically, so practising these at home will also help.

We will be focusing on the Non-Fiction genre where we will be experimenting with the structure and features when writing our pieces. There will be many opportunities for students to share their knowledge on interest topics when making non-fiction books. You may like to ask your child about what topic they are writing about and what facts they know about the topic.

What we expect the students to learn in Writing:

Year One and Two

  • Make plausible spelling attempts at unknown words and continue to build a range of spelling strategies.
  • Create a range of texts that show emerging use of appropriate text structure and features and use vocabulary specific to the topic and mode.
  • Edit writing by checking spelling and punctuation to make it easier to read.
  • Understand that publishing is the sharing of a piece of writing we are proud of with an audience.
