Book week 2020

This year we are celebrating Book Week from 17 - 23 October.

The theme is Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.

Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia, with many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spending a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. The College has arranged a number of activities to celebrate Book Week, including daily homeroom quizzes, lunchtime activities in the library, and a book fair!

Dungeons & Dragons Club

The Dungeons & Dragons Club is going from strength to strength.  This term we are running four sessions, with three of them having students as the Dungeon Master. Orson Lorenz-Markham (Year 9) and Amelia MacMillan (Class 2018) with be running the “Curse of Strahd” campaigns separately on different afternoons. Kai Cranfield will be the DM for “Waterdeep” on Wednesday afternoons and Mr Connellan will again be running the “Lost Mines of Phandelver” for beginners on Monday afternoons.

All the campaigns will be hosted in the Library from 3:30pm until 5:00pm.

There is the possibility that one spot may be available in each session. Any interested students should contact Mr Connellan ASAP.

Buk Bilong Pikinini book drive

Thank you to the John XXIII College school community for their generous support of the Rotary club project to support Buk Bilong Pikinini in relation to the book drive. They have had enormous and generous support from four local schools in the immediate community.

This was their first book drive and they estimate they will be sending in excess of 500kg of books later this year.

Thank you for your kind donation.

Sports Awards Evening

On Wednesday 14 October we celebrated the sporting achievements of our secondary students.

We were delighted to have elite hockey player, Georgia Wilson as our guest speaker for the event. Georgia’s rapid rise in hockey started with her Youth National Team debut in 2016, before joining the Hockeyroos a year later. Following full knee reconstruction in 2018 and a year on the sidelines, Georgia now finds herself back as a force in the Hockeyroos midfield and helped Australia qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Her story was an inspiration to listen to on the night.

Thanks to our compere for the evening, Mr Glenn Mitchell.

Congratulations to all the students on their fabulous achievements and sporting participation throughout the year.

Soccer Development Program

We are excited to announce that we will be proceeding with the Soccer Development Program to be run by J & J Football Training.

All players from Years 1 to Year 10, any gender and all playing abilities are welcome to join and participate in the clinics.

These small intense soccer clinics sessions will take place on the College ovals on Friday afternoon from 3:30pm to 4:30pm for 8 weeks and cost $195. With the first session commencing on Friday 23 October 2020. There is one coach for every 6-8 participants.

The focus will be on learning basic or improving advanced soccer skills, depending on each participant’s level, and more generally, on enjoying the benefits from playing a team sport to boost confidence, increase skills in concentration, persistence, self-discipline, and the ability to ‘think on the run’.
