Book Week 2020

In 2020, CBCA Book Week will be held in mid October, beginning on 17 October, and ending on 23 October, with the theme 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds'

In celebrating this year's CBCA theme (Curious Creature, Wild Minds), this song by Nathan Cahill is a reminder that we can find inspiration, information and imagination, just by opening a book!

3 Ways To Celebrate Books

  1. Share your favourite book with the people you think would love it just as much as you do.
  2. Create a new front cover for a book that you enjoy reading.
  3. Pretend to be a CBCA judge. Read a book and rate it.

Book Week Maths

When exploring the shortlisted books for this year's Book Week, there are plenty of opportunities to explore Maths.

  • Three by Stephen Michael King - classify the animals that appear in the story by how many legs they have. Create a map of Three's journey. You may even like to create your own map of your journey to match your very own picture story book.
  • Goodbye House, Hello House by Margaret Wild and Ann James - sort items around your house into big and small. Challenge yourself by sorting your items another way. Choose four things you would take with you if you had to move. Order these objects from largest to smallest.
  • Birrarung Wilam, a story by Aunty Joy Murphy and Andrew Kelly - In the story we learn about the path of rain running down a tree into a small stream, 2 streams into a small river and then many small rivers into the Mighty Yarra. Draw the path of the rain and explain its journey.

Newsletter Challenge

This Newsletter's challenge is inspired by the Book Week theme - 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.'

Equipment:

  • Create 9 cards (splitting each animal's name into three)
    Duck (D-U-CK), Giraffe (GIR-AF-FE), Horse (H-OR-SE)
Each part of the animal word represents a different section of the animal's body e.g. Duck (D- Head, U- body, CK- legs), Giraffe - (GIR - Head, AF-body, FE- legs), Horse (H- head, OR- body, SE - legs).

Challenge: How many different animals can you make? (maybe you'll make a Dorfe? With the head of a duck, the body of a horse and the legs of a giraffe). How do you know when you've found all the different combinations?

Send through your curious animals to Esbizzirri@srprestonwest.catholic.edu.au
