Agriculture has hit the ground running this term with a hive of activity..literally!

Year 7 and 8 have been learning about bees and hive care. We will be progressing into honey products and marketing later this term.

9/10 Agrifoods have been busy preparing the ground, propagating and planting vegetables for our new permaculture garden. The greenhouse is full to the brim with seedlings waiting to be planted and this will progress throughout this term. Our goal is to grow food to be sold to families in the school and at the local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. Watch this space!

9/10 Agriculture are currently working on our two beautiful steers in preparation for Northern Schools Steer Competition being held once again in Glen Innes this year. Six of our Year 9/10 class will attend due to COVID restrictions and will camp overnight at the Glen Innes Showground.

Our seniors have also been very busy propagating vegetables and learning about the safe application of chemicals and Soils.

It is wonderful to be back and getting to know the students has been very rewarding. I look forward to reconnecting with parents and achieving excellent outcomes for Agriculture at Guyra Central School.

Year 8 Visual Arts

Visual Design: Sports Jersey Design

In Term 4, Year 8 Visual Art students have embarked on an exploration of Visual Design. Students have learnt about the different of visual design and the fundamental elements of design and putting this understanding into creating a design for a sports jersey.

For inspiration, students studied the sophisticated designs produced for the 2019 NRL

Indigenous Round (11) rugby league jersey designs. In particular, the design for the Brisbane Broncos by the award winning Aboriginal graphic artist, Elaine Chambers-Hegarty. Her design incorporated the indigenous animal totems of the players in the team into a beautiful, but powerful visual composition.

Students also studied some of Chamber-Hegarty’s other print designs including her poster for the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women's Voices) Project funded by Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, 2018.

Photographic and Digital Media in the Visual Arts

Photographic and Digital Media is fast becoming a very popular and exciting form of visual expression amongst not only senior students of the Visual Arts, but also amongst students in Stage 4 and 5. With the development of accessible but sophisticated DSLR cameras (Digital Single Lens Reflex) and state of the art image editing software like the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator etc) students are able to not only learn about how to be creative when taking the photograph, but also be creative when manipulating photography. Below is experimental photography by senior Visual Arts students being creative with a DSLR camera around the school.
