Weeks 7 & 8

We've had a great few weeks continuing to learn, grow and perform! Students have developed confidence as they overcame some nervous feelings heading into the production.  Our day of rehearsing went well and our students sat patiently as we watched the run through of the whole production.  We've been most impressed with their efforts all round!  We're so proud of them for showing persistence and resilience - all of them were performers and weren't they wonderful!  Thanks to all our families for preparing their child's costume and doing a great job with returning paperwork - thanks!

We've been learning to:

- develop our counting skills with ordinal numbers and counting backwards and forwards.  Students have fine tuned the number names and consolidated knowledge of 2 digit numbers - including teen numbers.

- understand and write poetry! This has been in different forms such as rhyme and sensory poems.  Students have explored syllables and how poems can be created from using  structures with syllables.  We've explored the outdoors and how we can write poetry based on our senses.  Next week we will be looking at couplet poems and developing our knowledge of rhyming words and phrases.

- make inferences when we read. This is what we have called 'deep thinking'.  Students know that reading is thinking and we need to use the picture clues in order to think about our response... not just find it in the picture.  The questions they have been answering they have had to think more about... and answer in full sentences.  Continue to ask your child questions as they read to you that include the 'why' part.  Raise your expectations of their answers... don't accept an answer that starts with "because..." ask them to use a full sentence and you will be impressed with their ability to do so.

Shoe Laces

Yes it's that time... time to take some time to sit with your child and get them practising how to tie up their shoe laces.  Some of them are asking and curious how it's done.  They are at an age where their fine motor skills have developed and they can, with lots of practise and positive reinforcement, be successful in achieving this before the end of the year.   There is an expectation that students move into Junior School being able to tie their own shoe laces.  There's no time like the present to be working on this skill with them.  The holidays are a fabulous opportunity to practise!

Nude Food

Our SRC group have organised a student led project.  They are concerned with the amount of rubbish that is blowing around our school so have decided to encourage other students to bring NON-PACKAGED foods.  Snacks that are healthy and stored in reusable containers. eg: carrot sticks, fruit, nuts.  Items that we want to see less of are: roll ups, bars in wrappers, chips, lollies and fruit box drinks.  We encourage and recommend that students have a named water bottle (no juice drinks).  Each class will record the number of reusable containers and will go into the competition to win a prize.  It would be great to see us lead the way in NUDE FOOD! Thanks for your support and understanding.
