SCHOOL PRODUCTION

AIDA News!

It’s been an exciting start to production rehearsals for ‘Aida’.  We’ve got a terrific cast and crew and things are already starting to take shape.

We’ve learnt the song ‘Dance of the Robe’, which while not being the first song in the show chronologically, will be the first performed as it will be our showcase number at our Grade 6 Information Evening.

Dance of the Robe, takes place late in Act 1. The Egyptian warriors have captured a large number of Nubian citizens. Forced to live in a slave camp, they fear for their futures.  However, they soon realise that one of their fellow captives is Aida, the daughter of their king. They look to her for guidance, inspiration and leadership, qualities she knows she possesses but struggles to enact on.

Our Musical Director, Celeste Wells (Class of 2017) has been hard at work teaching us a three part harmony to make this number sound amazing. It also features solo moments from Aida (Ruby Damiana, Year 12) and Nehebka (Keira O’Connor, Year 11).

On the physical side of the performance, we’ve also been learning choreography for this number, thanks to our chief choreographers Jet Harris (Year 12) and Emily Reynolds (Year 11), as well as their mentor, Tiffany Couacaud and Emily Artis (both Class of 2018 and two of last year’s three choreographers).

While the number isn’t quite finished yet, we love how it’s shaping up, incorporating dance, movement, characterisation and even some drumming.

We also had a visit from our costume designer Katie Walton (Class of 2016) to give us an idea of the Nubian costumes and get students started on preparing them.

We remind parents and students to continually check the rehearsal schedule, which is constantly updated, to ensure they are at the right rehearsals at the right times. Let’s all keep up the good work!
