Year 9 Captains' Report

Awards Assembly Speech

Welcome Year 9 parents, guardians and teachers to the Year 9 Awards Ceremony, my name is Sophie Mastaing and Zac Hoiles.

For the Year 9 students 2018 has been a wonderful and exiting year with a few bumps along the way, but there was so many events, activities and new opportunities for everyone.

There has been so many sports events this year. There was the Swimming Carnival where students had the opportunity to show off their swimming skills, with a few students making it to District and Regionals.  Cross Country, where students ran around Lilydale Lake.  The Athletics Carnival, where Tate won!  District Athletics, where we had a fair few students compete, then to Regionals.  Congratulations to those who made it that far.  Interschool Sports and  Grade 6 and Year 7 Sports Day, which was a great day to focus on leadership skills.

Early in Term 2, we had Year 9 Careers Day. Everyone who participated,  found it was a great

experience and we know that each and everyone of you learned something new or found something you want to work towards.

We hope you all have a great summer.  Have fun in the sun and we all look forward to seeing you all next year in Year 10.  For those who are leaving this school at the end of this year, good luck, we wish you all the best.

On Thursday 7 June, it was the Year 9 Heath and Wellbeing Day.  We learnt a lot about mental health and resilience.  It was a fun day out.

In early Term 3 , we got to visit the Yarra Ranges Tech School to use the Technology available there.  We got to design our own piece of wearable Technology that can benefit people and make their lives easier. It was a great experience and we got to learn some new and amazing skills.

In Term 4,  we had the Year 9 Camp. We got the opportunity to take a boat ride and to explore some amazing places in Tasmania like; Cataract Gorge, Port Arthur, Tahune Airwalk, Mt Wellington, Mole Creek Caves and the Unzoo. It was great experience.

Last week, we all participated in exams for the first time. We had done all the preparation and work prior, to get an idea for the exams to come.

It is with great delight that we announce Stuart Morrow as our Kwong Lee Dow scholarship recipient for 2018.  Stuart was nominated by his teachers and coordinators after being recognised as a hard working student with aspirations to further his studies.

Curious Minds Program

CONGRATULATIONS

Mackenzie Coakley

This week, Mackenzie Coakley (Year 9) attended the Curious Minds Program in Canberra.  Mackenzie received a High Distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition last year and was invited to the attend the program.

What is Curious Minds Program?

Curious Minds is aimed at highly capable girls in Years 9 and 10 who have an interest in STEM learning areas.

This is a six-month program that combines two residential camps and a coaching program. The camps will enable the girls to explore all aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths through guest lectures, interactive sessions, practicals and field trips.

The coaching program will see each student matched with a female coach recruited from a variety of STEM backgrounds and together they will construct personal goals for the student. This might include discussing study options and career pathways, undertaking further extension work with support from their coach, developing ideas based on learnings from the camp or working on a project.

Congratulations and best wishes to Mackenzie.
