Library News

This term the focus in the Library is promoting reading for enjoyment. Two great programmes begin this week: West Australian Young Readers Book Award (WAYRBA) and The Premier’s Reading Challenge. In order to qualify for eligibility for prizes in the Premier’s Challenge students need to read at least 12 ‘books’ while there is no requirement of minimum numbers read for voting in WAYRBA.

This year we are going to have a go at promoting the programmes simultaneously. The books in WAYRBA can be included in the log for the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

West Australian Young Readers Book Award

The Award operates on four levels: picture books, younger readers, middle readers (Years Five to Eight) and older readers.

Nominations for next year

Readers are invited to nominate, through the Library, books that they have enjoyed for the following year. These nominations are then considered by the WAYRBA committee, and the lists are drawn up.

Eligibility

Books of fiction published within the last five years and currently in print. May be written by a living Australian or overseas author. Only one title of any author may be included on a list in any year.

Judging this year’s selection

Young people are asked to read titles on the lists and evaluate them as ‘terrific’, ‘good’, ‘okay’ or ‘not for me’.

The books on the reading lists have been nominated by the young readers of Western Australia.

Students have until 29 September to vote. This can be done online or through paper slips available in the Library.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

For students in Kindy to Year Ten. The challenge is to log 12 or more book titles during the challenge.

Duration: 8 May to 8 September 2023.

Students create an online account to log their reading (with help if necessary). Some students will complete this activity through their English class. Assistance is available in the Library should they need it.

Reading material can include: comic books, graphic novels, magazines, articles on line, song lyrics, poetry, ebooks, audio books, newspapers, content service like Ancestry and Kanopy etc.

There are prizes along the way.

New to the Library catalogue

We have added Britannica online to our selection of databases. Two links have been added to the Library Information page: Britannia Primary and Britannica Secondary. I have put a link to short videos on how to use these in the Information Skills Learnpath.

We have also added a link to “Orbit” the primary version of the Library system, Oliver. This has a simplified interface for our younger students.

Primary students and the Library at lunchtime

The Library has had a welcome influx of Primary students during their lunchtime. Students are engaged in several activities: reading, lego, origami and working on their laptops.
