Dear Parents and Carers,

This week is Education Week, the theme this year is ‘Active Learnings: Move, Make, Motivate’, which celebrates physical activity, hands on learning and student voice in education. All our students are joining in this special week’s activities. Please click here to see the photos from the week.  The Grade 2’s had their Planks incursion and created some amazing structures. The Preps have been to Coal Creek as part of their Inquiry unit. The 5-6 students have a special guest coming for their Master Chef afternoon. I hope all mothers had a relaxing and enjoyable Mother’s Day on Sunday; it was wonderful to see so many mums with our students on Friday.

On Tuesday the Smile Squad Dental Van came to Somerville PS. It will be here for a number of weeks. The Smile Squad team have confirmed there are zero costs for Smile Squad examination and treatment. Anything that is consented to on the form: exam, x-rays, teeth cleaning, sealants and fluoride varnish are all at zero cost to the parents. Any additional treatment that we're able to offer in the van or in clinic (ranging from fillings, crowns, extractions, deep clean) we will call parents to discuss first and gain consent, but it is also completely free. This includes if a full mouth x-ray (OPG) is needed.

Donna Dower and Tiffany Johnston, our Literacy Leaders have been working on adding more books to our school, for both Guided Reading and Take-Home Books. Over the last 3 years Somerville PS has spent just under $100,000 on new books. This investment has brought in over 12,000 new books to our school for our students. The books include classics, modern literature, and books to develop a high level of engagement for all students. During the rest of this year and 2024 we will be purchasing another 5000 books for students in Grades 3-6.  Our students are continuing their Reading Nights; we have some students who have read for over 150 nights so far! Our target is to have at least 300 students read for 200 nights by the end of the year; all students who read for 200 nights will receive a Golden Ticket to our Pizza Party! Well done to everyone on their commitment to reading; all our students are awesome!

We are currently working with the Junior School Council students to get student feedback about a new playground. Over the next 6 months we will be looking at different options, ideas and getting student feedback to inform School Council with the plan to build a new playground in the next 18 months.

Don’t forget Pizza Meal Deal tomorrow!

We hope everyone has a great week.
