JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Daniel Grozdanovski

Year 7 Coordinator

Here we are at the end of Term 3. After nearly three years of interruptions, due to COVID, it finally feels like we are back on track. Students have made the most of being at school, participating in events such as inter school sport, school production, visiting author Scott Gardner, Crazy hair day, book week and more!

This week Year 7 students will be attending the Melbourne Zoo to further enhance the learning of Ecosystems and Habitats that they have been learning about in science these past few weeks.

Year 7 SRC Day

Our Year 7 Student Representative Council have been working away to create a fun filled afternoon for the last day of term. Year 7 students from a variety of classes will participate in a range of activities focusing our areas of Sport, Art, Academic and Cultural/Community. We will finish off with a BBQ to celebrate what has been another fantastic term from all students in Year 7.

Attendance

At NGSC we can’t stress the importance of students regularly attending school. Yes, there are some health concerns and students should remain at home if they are unwell, but daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don't fall behind, both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12, or an equivalent qualification, have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

School participation is important as it maximises life opportunities for children and young people by providing them with education and support networks. School helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community.

Conversely, limited school participation is associated with a greater chance of dropping out of school, disruptive and delinquent behaviour and may lead to a cycle of rebellion against authority. These outcomes have later implications for employment, a range of health risk behaviours (drug and alcohol abuse), homelessness, poverty, welfare dependence, and involvement in the justice system.

Year 8 Camp

Year 8 Camp ventured to Halls Gap with students completing various activities around town. The highlight for most was the hike which ended with amazing views over Halls Gap and the surrounding area. This hike, for most if not all students, gave them an experience that they can bring back to school and use as a positive driver for the remainder of the year.

Whilst on camp students built on their positive relationships and teamwork with each other as well as the teachers that attended. There was a quiz night also that had the competitive juices flowing in their teams so a big thank-you to Ms Castle for putting that together.

On behalf of the coordinators, I would like to thank the staff that went on the camps and Mr Bond for putting them together.
