Year 10 Community Service - Tree Planting

Terry Molan

As part of the Year 10 Certificate of Religious Education (CORE), all Year 10 Religious Education classes will have completed an afternoon of community service by the end of this Term. So far 2 classes have spent the afternoon along the banks of the Grange Burn in various locations, planting trees and native grasses.

Co-ordinated by Chris Wilson from the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, our students have been enthusiastic and co-operative tree planters. They have worked well in teams and have realised the benefit their efforts will be to the community in the years to come.

When done well, tree planting is recognised as one of the most engaging, environmentally friendly activities that people can take part in to better the planet. Trees provide a multitude of benefits, both long and short term. As well as being attractive aesthetically, they remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, slow heavy rain and so reduce the risk of flooding.

So far, the Monivae Year 10 students have planted around 1,600 trees and shrubs, with more to come!
