360 Conferencing  - Parent Teacher Night

Henry Kendall High School considers the relationship between students’ families and the school to be of paramount importance. This year, Stage 4 Applied Learning has introduced 7/8 360 conferencing whereby our students discuss and reflect on their learning.

Conferences this year were attended by our Year 7 and 8 Applied Learning students, parent/carer and classroom teacher. Our teachers facilitated the 360 meetings, but our students were in charge of the conference and led the discussions based on their digital portfolios or e-portfolios.

During the conference, our students showcased their progress in both academic (content/skill) and personal growth (habits of mind) areas of learning.

I would like to congratulate our Year 7 and 8 students as they demonstrated to their families their personal responsibility for their learning as they discussed at length their areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. The tone of the conferences was positive with a focus on what can be done to ensure success as opposed to what has been done poorly. Congratulations to our first Stage 4 Cohort in Applied Learning to participate in 360 Conferencing.

Year 7

Term 3 Project: Rockfest

Driving Question: “How did this rock get here?”

Year 7 has taken a deep dive into all things GEOLOGY and DATA as they have explored how parts of the Earth, such as rocks, fossils and minerals, have formed. Students have also learned how to collect and use data. Student teams selected and investigated a topic of choice from layers of the Earth to Fossils, to the Rock Cycle of Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic rocks. The culmination of this project is our students creating a product that demonstrates their understanding of Geology this term and showcased to our authentic audience and community at Rockfest in Week 10! A special mention to Mrs Woodland for her organisation of the event!

From Mr Herring (Junior) Hook Event

This term our year 7's have been rocking it in their investigation of Geology. To inspire their inner miner, the Applied Learning faculty along with the amazing Mr Herring Senior, organized a sapphire sifting activity for the entire year group.

The process is straightforward, first we take a large sack of mine run (by-product of the mining industry) and scoop some into the two different sized fossicking sieves. We sift through the leftover rock and can find all manner of gems from quartz through to sapphires.

Our students were encouraged to keep their finds, some of which were quite rare. In all, this was an exciting activity that began our Rockfest module in an engaging and hands-on way.

WieIT STEM x Impact - Projects

Exciting NEWS for Year 7N Applied Learning!!!

To further deepen our Applied Learners knowledge of solving REAL Projects (Real Engaging Authentic Learning), we are very proud to share the wonderful news that in Term 4, 7N will be involved in the WieIT STEM Impact Program with the University of Technology which is fully funded by UTS.

The structure and delivery of the program will include:

  • 8 Hours in total working on a Driving Question
  • Facilitated and co-delivered by Mrs Blue and UTS Project Designer studying Engineering and IT at The University of Technology Sydney.
  • Structured learning centered around project-based learning and design thinking.
  • Applying knowledge to solve an authentic problem.
  • Students will use innovative technology and equipment to prototype a solution.
  • Industry professionals as mentors to share their expertise and be role models for students.
  • Zoom meetings with Engineering and IT professionals at UTS.
  • Showcasing their prototypes to other students and parents.

The specific Project our 7N Applied Learners will be completing is “Data for Marketing” (Data Engineering and Analytics).

HKHS students will learn about the way data is collected by big tech companies and how this data is used to advertise products to consumers.

Our students will develop an online marketing strategy to give to a smart watch company from the data gathered from case studies.

Stay tuned to our Term 4 Newsletter article and school Facebook Page for updates!

Year 8

Term 3 Project: “Mask Up”

Driving Question: “How can has Science changed the way we do things?”

What is our project about this term?                                 Written by Ella Staines 8N

That was the question Year 8 Applied Learning students were given this term. Each term student in Yr’s 7 and 8 are given a Driving Question, this is the question our terms project is based upon. In Applied Learning we use knowledge from our various other subjects as well as knowledge from our own research to create projects.

This term Year 8’s goal was to create a short video between 2-5 minutes about a pandemic that changed our understanding of medicine but most of all how we live our lives now and how we prevent the spread of disease in our modern society. For this project we had a few diseases to choose from to base our project on including: COVID 19, Polio, The Spanish Flu, and The Black Death. We made costumes, wrote our own scripts and became directors and editors of our films which will hopefully have an impact on our audience who watch them.

Applied-learning is about applying and solidifying our soft skills, collaboration, creativity, critical-thinking, citizenship, and communication when we work in groups or even on individual projects to prepare us for the world of work and for the classroom.

Guest Speaker Series:

“The Profession of Cybersecurity in Australia

In Term 3, we welcomed Cyber Ambassador, Michael Warnock, Commercial Director of Daltrey Australia PTY LTD. Michael spoke to our Yr 9 iSTEM students about his career that spans over 30 years in IT in Australia and internationally and the NSW Cyber Ambassador Program.

What is the program all about?

NSW Cyber Ambassadors are volunteers from the Cyber Security community who visit schools to encourage and inspire school students to enter a career in cyber security as well as educate teachers and the broader school community about the workforce opportunities now and in the future.

Cyber Security is a rapidly growing segment in the economy and is increasingly a crucial capability across almost every industry. Currently, there is a shortage of cyber security workers in Australia and the world, with this gap expected to grow.

Growing a strong and skilled cyber workforce is key to growing the cyber security sector. Enhancing workforce and skills development is a key pillar of the 2021 NSW Cyber Security.
