Special Education

Athletics

We are pleased to announce that we had three students from the Special Education Centre taking part at the Combined High Schools NSW Athletics Championships on the 7 - 9th September in Sydney. Charlotte Gott, Marlon Rosales and Lateesha Mead are all to be congratulated for an excellent effort in their respective multiclass finals. It was a pleasure working with these students this year and we look forward to more Athletes taking part next year.

The students had a great time competing in their different events:

Marlon Rosales; 100m, 200m,

Charlotte Gott; 100m, 200m

Lateesha Mead; Shot Putt, Javelin

A special mention goes out to Lateesha, achieving silver medals in both her events.

Ten Pin Bowling

On Monday 12 September the first Henry Kendall Ten Pin Bowling team travelled to Wyoming to take part in the Inclusive School Sport Unit Competition. There are a huge number of schools competing in this event across the state with 4 separate carnivals just for the Sydney North regional! The boys involved; Jet Black, Roy Ruthen, Mark Darragh and Patrick Stevens were a credit to the school, displaying excellent sportsmanship and learning new skills for the future. We wait to see if the boys have qualified to go onto the next round at Rooty Hill.

Work Experience

Through our Work Experience Program, Henry Kendall Special Education Centre students have been exploring possible work options and gaining some hands-on experience in a variety of industries.

We have received some excellent feedback from employers and should congratulate the following students on their efforts at work.

Charlotte Gott & Jolie Easton - Kariong Community Centre Preschool.

Lateesha Mead - Shop 3 Coffee

Faith Drylie & Kathryn Cameron - Gumnuts Childcare

Nicky Gogwana - Bookface Erina Fair

Curtis Chapman - Soaked Car Wash

Joshua Gunn - Lasercraft Industries

Huge thanks to our local employers who have taken on our students.

Tumbi Disco

On Wednesday 14th September our Special Education students were able to enjoy socialising with many other Units from the Central Coast. It was a wonderful turnout with approximately 200 students in attendance. It was the first event since Covid, whereby all units could come together in a social environment. The theme of the day was Fluorescent which added to the fun atmosphere of the day. Our students danced up a storm, interacted with friends from other schools and enjoyed the sausage sizzle for lunch. There were plenty of prizes to be won and the stage was open to those who wanted to show off their moves. Thanks again to Tumbi for hosting another fantastic disco for all to enjoy and practice their social skills.

Combined Schools

Signing Choir

After the success of our Central Coast Schools Showcase performances two of our senior signers were lucky to be given an opportunity to perform with the Combined Schools Signing Choir. On Monday 19 September, Jolie Easton and Lateesha Mead performed as part of the Primary Proms - Brindabella Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. What an incredible experience for them!

They are to be congratulated for their dedication and beautiful performance. We are very proud.

Work Crew

This term Special Education has returned to our work crew program. Students experience a working site with employees working beside them. Laser Craft Industries, West Gosford provides our students with the opportunity to work in a safe environment while putting into practice work skills taught at school. From experiences like these, opportunities for employment can become a reality. The program is an excellent joint initiative between Laser Craft Industries and our Special Education unit.

Social Gaming Club

This term has seen the creation of the Special Education Social Gaming Club where students, at recess and lunch one day a week, are able to come and play a variety of games with their friends whilst putting their social skills into practise. So far this term we have enjoyed playing both Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. Be on the lookout for some exciting inter-school Esports competitions for Mario Kart and Rocket League coming in Term 4.

Classwork

The 7/8 HSIE class have studied Early Imperial China this semester. Students have researched topics such as the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Warriors. As part of this program, students were able to dress up in traditional Chinese clothing and taste test Chinese food & drinks. All students have enjoyed this topic and are to be commended on their efforts.
