Congratulations to the Unit 4 Art students in successfully submitting their Outcome 2 Realisation and resolution folio!

The class have worked super hard all year, particularly during term 3, to complete their folio.

As their teacher, I am very proud of the artworks they have created.

Below is an explanation of their artwork:

Angie Chan Chai Ying: Continuing my exploration of symbolism to express my personal philosophies surrounding the increasing artificiality of society; I now challenge this obsessive desire to conform. My artwork depicts three flower components that entertain the cycle of life, strategically and delicately sculpted with the intention of reaching a level of perfection; a direct symbolic reference to the alluring and artificial nature of social media. To reinforce artificiality I chose the media of polymer clay to symbolise unnatural permanence of a living organism; with hopes of evoking feelings of confusion and awe. I have represented myself and the audience in the bee that perches on top of the cloche, peering into the glass but unable to reach the flowers. It’s a symbol of division and self restraint, bees are pollinators, similar to how users pollinate the algorithm. Without pollinators, the flowers die, and along with it so does the toxic algorithm.

Link Coleman: After exploring themes of healing in my Unit 3 artwork, I continue to explore this in my Unit 4 artwork with, ‘And so I learnt the meaning of self love, yet again’. It depicts my own perception of myself from the past, all the way to how I hope to in future through a series of three different drawings. The work is predominantly created digitally, however it also uses clay and mountboard. The artworks in the series detail my perception of myself and it’s ever-changing nature, and how also I hope, in the future, to grow stronger as a person, and to feel comfortable in my own skin.

Keisha Huynh: The fine line between life and death is explored in my Unit 4 digital artwork, ‘Mortality.’ I wanted to explore the way in which our initial perception and assumptions of others and things can be deceiving; hence why upon first seeing my artwork, one may not observe ‘death’ emerging from behind the bust figure, or the actual medium in which it was created, through the emulation of traditional paintwork. Without fully coming to terms with the way something is, however, is a representation of ‘mortality’ at its finest, as us humans can often be too fast to be critical.

Jocelyn Johnson: Following the concept of ‘Middle Child Syndrome’ I explored how stereotypically middle children are forced to grow up and end their childhood faster than their siblings, which ultimately introduces a build of independence. This inspired my artwork ‘The puzzle of silver linings’, created on a puzzle set using a bullet-point pen. This drawing was created on the puzzle set of a decaying playground. The decaying of youthful settings symbolises the ‘death of childhood’, as the puzzle pieces coming together represent the building of independence. Thus, even though childhood is ending, the silver lining is the great levels of independence gained.

Ashmitha Kurukulasuriya: ‘Angry Women’ presents the issues of women and women empowerment in the time period of the Riot Grrrls. Due to those times being some of the most aggressive and music-influenced feminist protests which were shown from the expressive facial features showing the anger within her along with her boiling hot blood referenced in her skin tone. The hairstyle and clothes are also a throwback to the Riot Grrrl era with unconventional styles being considered rebellious and empowering for women. The music element was primarily used to convey their messages so I presented the main figure as a band member with her guitar and the newspaper articles and collages being the main secondary ways they bestowed their messages. The pigs, on the other hand, were representative of the cops and men opposing the women's rights movements and are blue to contrast as the opposing force and are seen in swarms to seemingly overwhelm the women who are not in as great numbers.

Kyley Nguyen: Beginning my exploration of the theme ‘Greek Mythology’ in Unit 3, I continued to apply this concept in Unit 4 with my mixed media artwork, ‘Daily News’. This features media such as watercolour, oil paint and pencils on a large panel board. The artwork depicts social media’s significant impact on society's mentality, including how we view ourselves; continuously striving to change our appearance to impress others. The background includes hidden newspapers, displaying the negative aspects of social media, and how it affects us. However, we don’t consider this, as we are distracted by the brightly coloured social media posts, drawing the audience’s engagement. The artwork takes inspiration from Pheidippides, a Greek marathon runner known to spread the news. Just as Pheidippides quickly spreads news of events, there are social media posts that can quickly spread lies, deceiving users. Thus, manipulating our understanding and perspective of the public concept of beauty and world events.

Ana Santos: Embarrassed Out Loud, is an artwork that focuses on the idea of the emotion of embarrassment. It focuses on the viewer's own personal experience of a universal expression that can make the viewers cringe due to their own personal experiences. The artwork was created using a linocut that was printed on a newspaper article and magazine cut-outs of “h” and “A” as well as cut-ups from the news article itself.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN - TYPE and IMAGERY

One of the tasks completed by the talented Year 11 VCD students for Unit 2, Outcome 2 was a ‘Creative Type’ poster to celebrate TYPE. Students studied the historical and contemporary factors that influence style and layout using type. Each student researched and selected a type designer and typeface of their choice. They generated and developed ideas and showed skills in manipulating type and imagery to communicate ideas and concepts in a Final Presentation.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN - LOGOs & BRANDING

In Semester 1, the talented Year 10 Visual Communication Design students studied the important role of design in company marketing. They researched, generated, developed and refined their own design concepts using the design process together with the software Adobe Illustrator to create a logo for their chosen client.

The Year 10 Visual Communication Design students also designed an advertisement for the company using the software program Adobe Photoshop.
