Grade 6 Debating
On Tuesday 23rd of August, nine Year 6 students competed at the annual Brighton Secondary College debating competition against a number of local primary schools. All students should be very proud of the way in which they debated on the day and the time and effort they put into researching and writing their debates in the lead up to the competition. A special congratulations to Team 3 who made it to the semi-finals, meaning they placed in the top four of 32 teams.
Leila 6G "We arrived at Brighton Secondary and we waited for a long time and then we eventually went into a room with the other schools and we then split into different rooms to watch debates and participate. Our first debate was in the second round. We debated on the topic of banning horse racing. We were on the negative team. We won our debate. We eventually reached the semi finals, but unfortunately Hampton Primary won that debate. We are proud that we made it into the semi finals."
Upstanders
“Upstanders are people who help sort out an argument, and get help if it’s needed. They stay cool calm and collected, but get the message across firmly to let the bully know it’s not OK. Upstanders take action, and don’t laugh or join in because bullying sucks. Upstanders have your back.”
-Tess
Our Upstanders team have been learning about the difference between being an Upstander and dobbing. Did you know that dobbing is when you deliberately try to get someone into trouble? Being an Upstander and having someone’s back. It’s also about doing something to help someone who is being bullied, even if that means telling a teacher or another trusted adult.
Here are some tips on being an Upstander:
* tell the bully it’s not ok, and they’re making people feel horrible
*don’t laugh or join in, because it doesn’t make the person being bullied feel any better
*get help from a teacher or adult if you don’t feel safe stepping in
Sophia was also an Upstander last week in the playground when she noticed two boys deliberately ignoring another boy who was asking if he could play with them. Sophia stepped in and told them that excluding someone isn’t nice. When they didn’t listen to her, she went to get help from a teacher. Great job Sophia!
Dinnertime Chat: Share an example with your family of when you have been an Upstander!
Plants for grade 6 graduation: Well done to our Environmental Captains for helping with this.
Grade 1 and 2 visit : Sarah Klein, Marathon runner and Jude's aunt!
Jude 1B "Sarah Klein is my aunt. She came to school to talk to us about running because she is very fast. She has been in the olympics and the world championships. She runs marathons. The grade 1 and 2 students came to the library and listened to my aunt tell everyone about her experiences as a runner"
Book Week Parade
Penelope 2G "I dressed up as The Green Sheep from the book of the same name. I really loved reading that book and I always read it to my brothers and it is shared around the whole family. I got to go up and talk to Ms Gates on the microphone about my costume."
Melbourne Phoenix NBL visit
Tom 4B "It was pretty fun knowing that some of the people who came and coached us have played against Le Bron James in the NBA. They gave us a training session, including practising dribbling, passing and goal shooting and we played some fun basketball games. At the end of the day the grade 6 students played a game against the Melbourne Phoenix and the Phoenix team won!"
