What interesting Book Characters came alive at Aitken last week?

A huge thank you to the Library staff for organising such a wonderful Book Week for us to enjoy! Students thoroughly enjoyed the guest authors that entertained and inspired us all. Both Fairview and Cumberland students embraced the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday. Cumberland students enjoyed a Kahoot Book Week Trivia and congratulations to Elmar M in 5A who came in first place! The Cumberland picture book competition winners were also announced. Well done to all students who entered the competition and took such care and time to produce original stories and illustrations!

Ms Capraro and Ms Meszaros hosted entertaining sessions in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre for the Primary school students, teachers, and parents. One of the highlights was the Fairview Book Parade, where each class danced around the stage showing off their dance skills and costumes.

Father’s Day Breakfast

Thank you to all the dads, male role models, and family members who attended the Father’s Day breakfast this year. What a turn out! It is wonderful to have parents onsite once again to foster and promote a community spirit. Students thoroughly enjoyed sharing breakfast and celebrating the special people in their lives. A special thank you to the Parents and Friends Association for organising the event as well as the Father’s Day Stall! It was a huge success!

Prep News

Mrs Natasha Radley (Prep AHOS)

Book Week was so much fun. Some Prep students have said what they thought about Book Week:

Mia E - Prep H

“When we went to the CPA and danced on the stage, it was my favourite part.”

Yug R - Prep H

“I liked Book Week because I was a Knight.”

Tayza B - Prep C

“I really liked writing about my Book Week character. I dressed up as Shine from Shimmer and Shine.”

Sahbaj B - Prep C

“My favourite thing about Book Week was when we were dancing and the music was on.”

Nuvee H - Prep F

“I liked when I made my own bookmark at the Library at lunchtime.”

Naithik C - Prep F

“I dressed up as Don Bradman. I liked reading his book and he was scoring 100 since he was very young.”

The new word of the week is 'Tray' and yesterday the Prep students enjoyed learning about what a tray can be used for as well as participate in class try relay races. They had to balance a ball on the tray and run to the next person and swap until each person from the group was done. They had a lot of fun doing this.

Year 1 and 2 News

Mr Jevon Scandrett (Year 1/2 AHOS)

Welcome to Week 8!

Book Week

Last week, Aitken College celebrated Book Week. Year 1 and Year 2 students were delighted to attend a special presentation by author, Coral Vass, on Wednesday 24 August. Coral spoke with the students about the process of creating a picture storybook and answered several burning questions from the excited audience. Some lucky students were invited to the stage to act out parts of Coral’s stories. The highlight of the week was the Fairview Book Parade. It was so wonderful to celebrate this event with friends and families in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre and to witness the creative costumes from each class. Year 1 teachers dressed up as characters from the classic picture storybook ‘Caps for Sale’ and the Year 2 teachers dressed up as a selection of characters from ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. It was a fun day for all!

Year 2 Swimming

The Year 2 swimming program concluded last week. I would like to thank the teachers and staff once again for the organisation and supervision over the four-week program. I would especially like to thank Mrs Christine Pocervina, Head of Faculty - Physical Education, for her hard work and care in ensuring the program ran smoothly. The students thoroughly enjoyed their time at Splash and should be commended for their positive attitudes and exemplary behaviour.

As always, your first point of contact should be your child’s homeroom teacher followed by myself as the Assistant Head of School (Years 1 and 2).

Year 3 and 4 News

Mrs Anne Adams (Year 3/4 AHOS)

These past few weeks have been dominated by book crazy students and teachers. Book Week was celebrated last week. Over the term, the Librarians have been showcasing some of the winners nominated for the Children’s Book Council of Australia awards. Students read the books in their library periods and voted for their favourite book. Last week culminated in author visits from Adam Wallace and Lily Wilkinson, character book dress up day and the announcement of the Aitken College short story awards. Phew! Congratulations to all students who wrote a book and illustrated it; a great effort considering it took J.K. Rowling six years to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A huge thank you to Library staff for their organisation and effort in making last week a memorable one for all the students.

Here are some highlights from the students:

Last week we got the chance to meet Lily Wilkinson. When we meet Lily I was REALLY EXCITED. Lily explained to us how she got her inspiration for her book series How to make your monster. She told us really good tips for writing we can use in the future. She was really kind and answered our questions towards the end. We created our own monster. The phoenix who is gold white chicken wings and breaths fire. All of the Year 4 students really appreciated the visit from Lily. This was really fun.  Sarah D - 4J

On Friday we were all dressed up as superheroes, supervillains, fantasy characters, and even athletes! These are from all kinds books around the world. We took photos with the class in the morning, we also played Kahoot with Year 3 - Year 6 (Cumberland). It was lots of fun being there and having fun with all my friends and teachers. It was great to be there.  Fateh R - 4J

On Friday aka Book Week. We had so much fun I saw someone riding a dinosaur it was inflated we done a Kahoot! And me and my partner Kiyan came 21st out of 250 to around 300, but it was really fun and then it was lunchtime. Me, Zayne, Kiyan and Savidhu played ping pong on the ping pong table, we used a dam ball it was the best. This is Xavier M and thank you.  Xavier M - 4J

Adam Wallace came to the Library and all the Year 3 classes were there. He taught us to draw from his book called ‘how to draw.’ He told us how he got inspiration from everyday life. He told us about his new upcoming books and we could order them. Shazelle O and Alyssa R - 3R

Adam told us about himself when he was in Year 4 and how he began to write. He wrote a funny book but the teacher said that it was too silly. Adam wrote another book and the first page was serious and after that, he went back to writing funny writing.  Raavi S - 3R

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/6 AHOS)

Book Week is always a highlight of the calendar for our Year 5 and Year 6 students, especially the character dress-up, the Cumberland quiz and guest author visits. Year 5 and Year 6 students were fortunate to hear from two of Australia’s great authors this week; Nova Weetman spoke to Year 5 students and George Ivanoff spoke with Year 6. Together we learnt about each author, how the authors come up with ideas and the process of bringing those ideas to life, and many other useful tips to benefit our own writing. We even had a go as a group at planning and writing our own story!

Sayuni M and Honeybel P  - 5M

Book Week is a week where kids in Prep - Year 6 dress up as things from their favourite book. The CBCA shortlisted books we read were 'When the water hole dries up', 'Walk of the whales', 'Amira’s suitcase', 'Jetty jumping', 'What do you call your grandma', and 'Winston and the indoor cat'. On Wednesday 24 August we had an amazing guest speaker come and show us how she got inspired by  different things and how she made her books. This person’s name is Nova Weetman. One of the most exciting things about Book Week was DRESSING  UP. Prep - Year 6 students dressed up as their favourite book characters and talked about them in class.

Community Service Reminder

The Year 6 Community Service Captains, Eva J and Roman P, with the help of Scarlett P from Year 4, would like to assist people in need. They are asking Aitken families to support a Food Bank Drive, so that donations can be delivered to their local church. A box has been placed in each Primary classroom with a list of suggested food items and goods. During the last week of term, Eva and Roman will collect all the boxes and organise delivery. Thank you so much for the generous donations so far, it is very much appreciated!
