Social Justice Day - Tuesday 16 August
Students representing Aitken College attended the second Social Justice Day, held at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. It was an opportunity for students to take time out of their usual school routine, to imagine and consider ways to create a better world. Below are some student reflections from the day:
Today six students including myself, went to PEGS, joined by St Leonard's and Wesley, to discuss the problems and challenges the world faces. We discussed topics that are of interest such as climate change, global warming and sexism. Many ideas were shared around the room, tactics to combat some of these problems were planned in small groups and eventually shared to everyone who participated in the day. Madison H
My experience at the social justice day excursion was something unforgettable. The opportunity to meet students of the same age from other schools and getting to interact throughout a day, was something we usually wouldn’t be able to do. Learning about issues in the world via guest speakers and in small groups was quite intriguing. We learnt about power mapping, and how to present an issue to others through a more formal format. Overall, this day was something I’d cherish forever, it was something different, and I was grateful to be a part of it. What I took from this day is that we can make change, maybe not this week or in two months, but change can be made. Isabella G
Social Justice Day has been an eye-opening experience for me. It was such an exciting and heart-warming event, that brought students from a range of ages and schools together to discuss and collaborate on different issues around the world we are passionate about. It taught us how to invoke our voices and provoke change not just in our small community but on a national scale. I learnt about the importance of power mapping in designing an effective campaign to get our message across, and how to use tactics to emphasise and spread awareness about our cause. I really enjoyed this informative experience and will take the knowledge I have learnt with me to spur new change. Sahez S
