SPORTS REPORT

SPEAKER FROM VIS

On 3 December 2013, a group of McKinnon students were introduced to an inspiring individual.  Sport and Physical Education Representatives (S.A.P Representatives) from each class were invited to a final lunch to thank them for their contributions throughout the year.  All S.A.P representatives were nominated by their teachers and have the responsibility of assisting the teacher during classes as well as providing feedback and solutions on sport and PE issues within McKinnon.

At this lunch, the S.A.P Representatives were also treated to a guest speaker from the VIS.  Mr Dylan Alcott is a para-olympian basketballer who has won medals at both the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and the 2012 London Paralympic games.  He showed the students his medals and told stories about his life and what motivates him to be the best.  His overarching message was to make the most of your opportunities and try as many things as you can while you are young.  Dylan is now focussed on tennis and hopes to get a wildcard into next month’s Australian Open.

We thank the VIS for providing the opportunity for Dylan Alcott to speak to our students, and thank all the 2013 SAP reps. Enjoy your summer of sport!

TABLE TENNIS STATE FINALS

On Wednesday 27 November 2013, a group of Year 7 and Year 8 Boys represented McKinnon Secondary College in the Table Tennis State Finals.

The following Year 7 students Tae-Seong Kim, Lewis Yang, Su-Yong Oh, Peter Tomaras, Wei Qi Xie and Heonjae Shin defeated McGuire College 6-0 in the first round, lost to Brunswick Secondary College 171 points to 163 points (matches and games were tied) in the second round, defeated Mercy College Camperdown 6-0 in the third round.

This allowed the boys to be in the Semi-Final against Balwyn High School.  All the games were very close coming down to the overall points on who will be in the State Final.  They were defeated by 158 points to 154 points.  They represented the school, the team and themselves admirably.

The following Year 8 students Gabriel Giber, Gary Lin, Brandon Linnett and Haris Brljak defeated Galen College 6-0 in the first round, lost to Brunswick Secondary College 252 points to 196 points (matches were tied) in the second round, defeated Warrnambool College 6-0 in the third round.

This also allowed these boys to be in the Semi-Final against East Doncaster Secondary College.  All the matches were close, however, the boys were defeated 5-1 (244 points to 185 points).  They proudly showed their school colors and cheered one another as did the Year 7’s from the side lines.

Congratulations to all these boys for their outstanding efforts throughout the year.

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013

Last week McKinnon entered three teams in the Australian Schools Basketball Championships held at Knox and Kilsyth.  Teams travelled from all over Australia and the Chinese National team played as well.  A highlight of the week was seeing Dante Exum, a future NBA Top Five draft pick play for his Canberra High School.

The Year 7-8 girls played out six matches and won four during the week.  McKinnon lost to Luther and Sienna but did defeat Damascus, Fairhills, All Saints and Central Coast.  This qualified them second overall in their age group but unfortunately they lost their Semi Final to Fairhills by one point to claim the Bronze Medal.

The Year 7-8 boys played out seven matches across the week.  They lost all pool matches but were very competitive in each game going down by 5-12 points in each match.  They still qualified for a Semi Final where they lined up against Aquinas Ringwood who were undefeated. McKinnon boys played a blinder and got to a fourteen nil lead at the start and maintained pressure all match to win.  This placed them in the Final where they lost to Luther College but did win a Silver Medal.

The Year 9-10 boys team played against four schools during the pool stage defeating Parkdale and Cabra Domincan, but lost to Westfields and St Pauls.  They finished third and played off against Westfields in the semi going down by eight points.  The boys won their Bronze Medal match.
