Rostrum Public Speaking
On Sunday, 27 May, Giverny W. from 9E represented Doncaster Secondary College at the Rostrum ‘Voice of Youth’ public speaking competition. Her topic was ‘A trip back in time’, where she spoke for six minutes on the challenges that adolescents can face with stress and expectations and used her trip back in time to revisit elements of childhood that can bring happiness.

Here is an excerpt of her fabulous speech:
“Upon reflection, I know that I would love to regain what I had as a child. The qualities of freedom and innocence. Stressless school, imagination and wonder, and not letting social standards hold me back. However, I am not saying that I necessarily want to be a child again. I am saying I want to maintain those childlike qualities, but I don’t want to be childish or leave the life I am living now. It would be a great experience to go back in time, but the reality is, I am looking forward to the future. I can’t wait to finish high school, get my drivers license, go to uni and start my own family; to become an adult. But I also don’t want to be weighed down by adulthood, because I lose these oh so precious childhood qualities. And I encourage you to do the same thing. Imagine a world where we live more carelessly and full of wonder. Where you can wear thigh length rainbow socks and not be judged. People who aren’t children, possessing childlike qualities could bring that.
I encourage you to reflect on your childhood self, like I have, and think about what you would love to gain back from your childhood, something you have lost over the years. Take a trip back in time yourself, and a journey of self-discovery. Because taking a trip back in time to simply our childhood, could change the world.”
Congratulations Giverny!

Music Camp - Student Reflection
Last Monday 21st of May approximately 90 students from Year 7 to 12 headed off to Mt Evelyn for a 3 day music camp. This was my first music camp, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! When we first arrived, we unpacked all our music equipment and started practising right away. Those of us starting out on new instruments were guided by the senior students who are much more proficient in their instruments. The music teachers were all on hand to help us too. During the three day camp, we were all busy practising and learning new songs together with the full ensemble. It wasn’t all music throughout. We still had some fun activities planned such as candle making, archery and flying fox (had the weather been better). There was also a mini concert and movie night during our stay.
It was a fantastic experience had by all and a great way to get to know all the students in an informal setting. We went home after 3 days and are all looking forward to the Winter Concert.
