Year 7 Student Poetry

Throughout Term 1 our Year 7 English students undertook a unit of work on poetry where they explored and experimented with using figurative language and different forms of poetry. On Open Night the best poems from each year 7 class were put on display.

I am proud to announce the Top 2 poems from the Year 7 were “Nonno” by Harry G (7K) and “Hauntings” by Scout P (7C).

Honourable mentions were also given to Kate P (7D) for her “Ode Poem” and Conner A (7B)  for “Cinquain”.

Please enjoy reading their amazing work below.

“Nonno” by Harry G (7K)

Nonno

Brought joy

laughter

A heart of gold

Calm as wind

drifting by

Just his presence

made you feel

safe

as though

you were

a baby bird

surrounded by it’s family

Honoured by all

often misunderstood

by some

He cared for all

Never left your side

stayed strong

Stubborn!

Hauntings by Scout P. (7C)

The cold wind howls,

Screaming thunder growls,

A snap of a twig, a fearsome scratch,

And without the comfort of a lighted match.

Demons lurk, along with the unknown,

I can hear the clatter of their cones.

The darkness is calling, falling,

And I can still hear the evil crawling.

I scream, I cry, but they still come.

Fear creeps further until my heart beats numb.

Then a blood-curdling truth hits me with dread,

Like prey, like predator,

I am worse than dead.

“Ode Poem” by Kate P (7D)

Ah, the best present –

A gift from the angels.

A library of knowledge,

In a box,

You can fit,

In your pocket.

Visiting it every day

Talking to it,

Writing to it,

Holding it always.

Never leave me.

Keep all my life intact.

Waiting,

Watching,

For a single mistake,

So it can correct it.

A library of knowledge,

One tap away.

I’d be dead without it,

Dead without my phone.

“Cinquain” by Conner A (7B)

Snowflakes

Mesmerising, beautiful

Dancing, Twirling, Floating

As soft as a white blanket

Winter
