CSIRO STEM professionals

MGSC has been partnered with David Manallack for the CSIRO STEM professionals in schools. David is a  Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Pharmacy at Monash University.  David gave a presentation to two Year 7 Science classes in which Chemistry was explored through the elements of the periodic table, pharmaceuticals, and common molecules. Here are some of the student's responses:

I found it interesting. I learnt about what he does in his job. I liked how he explained everything as it was easy to understand and how he let us contribute. I enjoy learning about Chemistry.

Sriya Amara

The talk was very informative. I found it interesting because he was funny and kept us engaged. I learnt about different particles and the periodic table of elements. The best part was building the particles.

Ella Bennett

I found it very interesting and also learnt a lot!

I learnt more elements of the periodic table and also learnt more about cells and different medicines.

The best part for me was listing all the medicines and learning all about them.

I also think David was very entertaining and that helped when trying to learn these new things!

Ana Botsioulis

In the talk with David Manallack we got involved with activities, such as creating our own molecules, and discovered facts about how certain molecules are formed and how the particles within them act. I found it quite interesting and learned some new things along the way. Everyone got involved and had an input towards the activities and we all enjoyed our time during this session.

Ava Gryszan

I did learn a lot more than I thought I would have and it was very interesting to say the least. I learnt about new elements in the periodic table that I had never known existed. I think the best part was making the atoms with the kit, I also quite enjoyed the talk he gave - it was interesting, fun and precise.

Amira Jolly

I found the Chemistry talk very interesting because I learnt that there are so many different types of medicines that are all essentially made from the same thing. Definitely the best part was at the start, when we were naming all of the elements on the periodic table, and I knew a lot of them, but I had no idea that there was just so many of them!!

Ella Macdonald

It was quite interesting learning some new things about the periodic table and how many of those elements we need to stay healthy. I liked making atoms.

Isabelle Newell

I found it interesting that the elements of the periodic table had different names instead of the initial e.g. FE = Iron. I learnt that molecules look much different e.g. H2O = having 3 molecules 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen. My favourite part was when we got to play with molecules kits!

Sammy Roberts

I found the part about the molecule sizes very interesting. I never knew about some of the different types of medicines. I would say that the best part was the free handouts! But I also really enjoyed making my own molecules. I like how he got the group of 10 girls to act like atoms it was more interesting than just talking about atoms moving!

Jemimah Stewart

I thought that the talk was informative and interesting. I learnt that (from Alyssa’s drug questions) lots of drugs are used for medicinal purposes and not just for “other reasons”. The best part was the free stuff.
