Student Leadership

Anzac Day memorial service

On Sunday 21 April  I had the pleasure of attending the Anzac memorial service held in Beaumaris together with Annie Zhou (Senior EAL leader) and Lily West (Middle School Captain). It was a lovely service with a very strong sense of local community demonstrated by strong attendance. Both students enjoyed taking part in the afternoon laying a wreath and the three books donated by the school.

We have since received acknowledgement from the Beaumaris RSL for taking part in the annual ANZAC Commemorative March and Service.  The books we donated and laid on the Cenotaph have been donated to various local schools.

VASGSC  Year 10 Student led conference, 2019

The two Year 10 student representatives working as part of the planning team for the conference are Lily West (Middle School Captain) and Nisha Makam (Middle School Languages Leader). Both students travelled to Geelong Tech last week to attend the first planning day for the conference hosted by Mathew Flinders Girls’ College. These students are working with pairs of students from each of the seven government girls’ colleges to organise and execute a full day conference for just over 100 students to be held in September. Thanks to Sian Sharpe (SRC Coordinator) for accompanying the students for this first trip.

Student leadership conference opportunities.

On May 23, a group of student leaders will attend the World Vision Youth Conference.  The World Vision Youth Conference is an immersive one-day experience designed to inspire and empower current and emerging student leaders to become active global citizens and a voice for justice in the world.

Reaching thousands of students across Australia, the conference supports learning outcomes that align with the Australian Curriculum and will also support programs within our Personal Learning curriculum Years 7 to 10.

Students come from all over the state to attend this event to develop the confidence to put their skills into action by leading this year’s 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge here at MGSC.

SRC Fundraising

Through the World's Greatest Shave the SRC and MGSC community raised over $2000 for blood disorder cancers. Congratulations to the three students and one teacher with warm hearts and cold heads who gave up their crowning glory for a very worthy cause.  Well done Marko Berkhourt, Amethyst Parlanti and Matilda Liu who took the shave and Derinsu Bulut for donating her long hair.  More thanks to the  Ms Sian Sharpe, Charlotte Stokes (Year 9)  and our skilled volunteer professional hairdresser, Brigette Dixon.

The SRC will be supporting young people and their families going through cancer treatments with their 'Go Grey in May' Free Dress Day at the end of the month.

VIC SRC Congress – July 9 - 11

We have the opportunity to send three delegates to the VIC SRC Congress again this year. Congress is the annual three-day explosion of student voice! Students gather from all around the state to talk about the biggest issues in education and how students want to work together to fix them.

In 2019 Congress is being held on the 9, 10 and 11 of July at Ormond College, part of The University of Melbourne. The cost of attending this conference will be covered by the school for up to three students; however, a firm commitment to attend is required with delegate tickets costing $210 each. Delegate ticket price includes accommodation, meals, delegate pack and t-shirt. Any interested students should have a look at the details via the link below and contact Ms Harvey. Tickets for this event will sell out fast.
