Speech Day Awards
On Monday 11th December, the Junior School will hold their annual Speech Day at the Senior Campus. It is an opportunity for the students to share their musical talents and for the staff to recognise individual students for awards. Junior School staff have met and discussed the relative merits of students shortlisted for awards.
The Ann Scott Award was established by the Hamilton College Council in 1991 to recognize and honour the contributions made by Mrs. Ann Scott during her 17 years as Head of the Junior Campus. This Prize is to be presented each year to a student in Year Five who demonstrates the qualities of Creativity, Imagination, Leadership and Initiative. These qualities were amongst those so strongly exemplified and encouraged by Mrs. Scott as a teacher and as leader of the Junior Campus.
The Certificate for Service to School Community is awarded to the student who has been recognised by the teachers for special qualities and achievements. These qualities are: selflessness, dependability, involvement in the school community and initiative in helping and assisting others. The recipient of this award demonstrates these qualities consistently.
The Dux is awarded to the Year Five student who has achieved the highest academic results for the year.
The Angus Wilson Award is presented to a Year Five student who displays a ‘have-a-go’ approach to learning, a positive attitude, resilience and determination. The recipient is known for trying their best and being a ‘team player’.
This Award is presented by the Wilson Family in the memory of their beloved son, Angus. He was admired by the staff and students for the traits this award recognises.
The Prize for Musicianship is awarded to the Year Five student who exhibits outstanding musicianship. They would have made significant contributions to the College’s musical programmes.
The Prize for Art is awarded for the Year Five student who has demonstrated artistic flair, creativity and imagination.
Certificates for Sportsmanship are awarded to Year Four and Year Five students who have approached sport and Physical Education lessons with consistency and the right attitude. They uphold the sporting culture of the College and, are excellent role models both on and off the field. Sporting representation is one of the criteria, but not the most important.
Compass Awards
Congratulations to Nick Hoskyns and Olivia Mann for being the first Year Five students in 2017 to complete the Compass Level 1 awards. Both students will be presented with their certificates at a Junior School Assembly. Modelled on The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, The Compass Award is designed to enhance development of the individual child. Students aged 10-14 years old choose their own challenging activities, learn new skills and in the process, develop initiative and commitment, becoming more responsible and motivated young people. The Compass Award is the chance to gain the benefits of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at an earlier age.
