Teaching and Learning

Our core business at The Hamilton and Alexandra College is teaching and learning. We work with students to help them learn about themselves and the world around them. Deep knowledge about a subject is vital but applying that knowledge and recalling that information at key times is also an important part of the learning. Here are three practical ways that the teaching staff are working to help your child study effectively and become life long learners.

1.   Homework

Our team of excellent staff are continually refining how we deliver our curriculum and support each student in their learning journey. Homework is an important part of that process for all students from Years 7-12. Continual review of class work and practice of new concepts and ideas is important. Homework is beneficial to build learning confidence. It might be 20 minutes of reading a night, the completion of some maths problems, a chapter review quiz in science or instrumental music practice. As a parent you can support your child by regularly reviewing their record book, discussing what homework has been assigned and what assessment tasks are due. Parents are encouraged to reach out to the student’s mentor for further guidance on their academic program.

2.   Elevate Study Skills Program

This week students in Years 10-12 attended the Elevate Study Skills Program.   Marcelle, a dynamic presenter from Elevate worked with students to instil key strategies for effective time management, focused learning and recall of information, exam preparation and how to work in study groups. For our Year 10-12 students:

  • Term 1 we encourage students to set goals around their study and establish a good work ethic
  • Term 2 we want students to establish solid foundations and this means having good knowledge of each subject
  • Term 3 is about focus, and being very clear about the course requirements and what skills and knowledge will be assessed
  • Term 4 is about finishing the year well, implementing a revision program, meeting with teachers for feedback and doing practice exam questions and paper.

Our Middle Years students will have an opportunity to work with Elevate later in the Semester.

3.   Academic Assistance

One of the programs that we are proud of at The Hamilton and Alexandra College is after school academic assistance that we offer Monday to Thursday from 3.45 – 5.30pm. Each night staff are rostered on to supervise and support student study. Students are required to sign into the program in the library and sign out upon departure. If you would like more information about the program, please contact your child’s mentor.

2020 Year 10 Central Australian Experience:

Important Information for Parents

We are fast approaching the due date (see below) for the second payment instalment for this amazing experience. Could I please ask that those families still owing the first instalment also attend to that ASAP. We need to finalise our exact numbers for the two groups and hope to advertise what these groups will be by the end of the month, so meeting these deadlines are very important as we need to pay deposits for various aspects of the journey. If you have any questions or your child’s circumstances in regards to attending this trip have changed, please contact Dr Hirst at the school ASAP.
