Prayer at the Pole

Our annual event of Prayer at the Pole is where we as a College community come together to pray for our College community, our wider community of Taree and outer regions, our local leaders, our Country and it's leaders extending to the World leaders. It was a very uplifting experience being involved in this morning of prayer with our students, teachers and staff. We have a great team of prayer warriors!

We all then enjoyed a yummy breaky!!

Operation Christmas Child (OCC) for 2018

Has begun, our Primary students are bringing in "Something for hygiene". We have attached a plan for collecting items over the next couple of months so that we can pack many boxes to send to children less fortunate than we are..

Of course if you have children in Secondary school you can also be involved and bring your items into the Front Office. Secondary students have the opportunity next term to 'sponsor a box' for the boxes that our Primary students create for just $10 per box.

Calling all film fans!! "2018 REC YA SHORTS"

The 4th annual REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival returns this year on the search for the next wave of young regional filmmakers from around the state. The film competition is open to any regional Australians aged 12-25 years, with the deadline to submit all films by September 24. Films must be under 6 minutes, appropriate for general audiences, and creatively include the theme of ‘ESCAPE’ and the signature item of a ‘SIGN’.

There are thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs, with the finalists’ films selected to screen at the new Nextwave Youth Film Awards for the 2019 Screenwave International Film Festival. The festival will also provide an opportunity for filmmakers from all over Regional NSW to meet with fellow creatives and hear from industry professionals.

This year’s program will also see over 70 in-school filmmaking and mental health workshops come to schools throughout Northern NSW for students interested in learning what it’s all about behind the camera lens. 'Brainstorm Productions' back @ TCC Monday June 18

The students will remember the last performance 'Cyberia'. These are a very talented, creative and passionate group of people who want to stimulate and teach students through drama.

This year's performance and related activities are called ‘The Hurting Game’ (NOT linked in any way to the novel, film, song or T-shirt of the same name).

The performances (2 sessions, Jnr and then Snr Secondary School students) use drama and follow up discussions to focus students’ attention onto issues of bullying, peer pressure and insecurities.

The overall aim was to challenge students to reject destructive relationships at school and online in favour of caring and supportive relationship strategies. (Yeah, sounds a bit cheesy, but if you’ve seen Brainstorm’s material before you’ll know that their performances and material are relevant, realistic and even a little confronting and challenging).

‘The Staff & Executive at TCC consider this performance and the related activities so important for our College community, that there was no charge to students and their families.’

Secondary Debating Teams

In Term 2 Week 5, students from years 7-10 competed in the Debating Eisteddfod at Manning Entertainment Centre. After many lunch time practices, all teams displayed exceptional research and persuasive skills, as well as professionalism as they competed against other school teams from the Manning Valley.

The week was a great success with the following results:

1st place sub-juniors (Year 7) - Calvin Harris, Justin Colville, Cory Wilkinson and Sebastian Lazzarotto.

2nd place sub-juniors (Year 7) - Hannah Davies, Lauren O'Neil, Olivia Nunez and Taylor Donaldson.

2nd place juniors (Year 8) - Brodie Ehsman, Alicia Hill, Drew Sumpner-Johnston and Cassidy Donovan.

3rd place intermediate (Year 9/10) - Jasmine Macpherson, Zara Andrew and Michellie Hayes and Jack Summerhill.

A fantastic effort from all involved.

Inspiring our budding film makers

Screenwave (a group that organise and promote Rec Ya Shorts - a state wide regional film competition) came to Taree Christian College in Week 3 of Term 3 and discussed the many different ways to plan for, create and edit a digital film. Twenty four students from Years 7-11 were enrolled for the workshop and all interacted with a passion and zeal for the subject. Alongside the discussion of different styles (genres) and practical ways of constructing a film, the Screenwave team delivered a much welcomed message of mental wellbeing and health for youth. Here are some comments made by two participants on the day:

The Rec Ya Shorts team came to our school to teach and inspire our small group of students who wanted to learn more about filming. I really loved the Rec Ya Shorts team because they gave us a good and simple understanding of how to make a short film. They gave us some great tips on how to direct and use camera angles in our films and showed us some winning examples from the past youth competitions to inspire us.

Georgia O’Grady (Year 9)

The film making workshop we had at school was fantastic! I learnt so much that day about filming techniques, how to edit films and how to write scripts. On the day, my friend and I were lucky enough to play around with the camera that was provided for us and learn about different camera angles and shots. Another good thing about this film making workshop, was that we got to talk about mental health, which is an important issue in our society.

I definitely can’t wait for the film making workshop to come back next year.

Bee-Bots

Our Infants students have been starting to learn about Coding using our new robots in the ISC. Bee-Bots are exciting programmable floor robots for younger students. The child friendly layout appeals to students and it is a perfect starting point for teaching control, directional language and programming. This open-ended resource allows students to use the Bee-Bots as a tool to enhance learning in Literacy, Science & Numeracy through a multitude of activities.

Taree Primary Eisteddfod 2018

The Primary Eisteddfod team had a wonderful time at the Eisteddfod in Week 5. We had over 60 students participate in different areas including Debating, Sacred Reading, Public Speaking, Drama and Dance Drama. Drama and public speaking are wonderful opportunities for our students to share the talents and gifts they have, live on stage at the Manning Entertainment Centre. We are very proud of each and every one of them, and believe they have a bright future ahead of them. The awards are as follows:

Stage 3 Board Games

Stage 3 students have been working on a Project Based Learning activity in the ISC this term. Students began their design through a research phase where they tested current board games on the market. Currently students are in their creation stage, and will finish with a testing stage in Week 10.

Their design brief is to create a board game which incorporates 5 critical elements as below.

Game Board: This is where players will keep track of where they start, where they move throughout the game and how they determine the winner of the game. You MUST design a homemade board; you CANNOT use a board from a pre-existing game unless you cover it with plain paper to start fresh.
Player Pieces: These are used by each player so they can identify themselves and their opponents during game play. You are allowed to use pieces from existing games, or you can create your own pieces. You must have enough player pieces for 4 people.
Gameplay Pieces: These are the manipulative that each player uses to advance through the game. Examples include a spinner, a set of dice, a stack of cards that are selected one at a time, etc. Use ideas from classic board games to help you determine the best method for your game. You are allowed to use pieces from existing games, or you can create your own pieces.
Rule Sheet: These are the instructions that you will provide letting others know how to play your game. Make sure you include a section on (1) how to start playing, (2) how to move through the game, (3) how to determine a winner, and (4) how to resolve problems that may arise during game play. Each of the 4 required rule sections are worth 5 points.
Game Box with Logo: like any good board game, you need to have something to keep it in when you aren’t playing to prevent the pieces and the board from getting lost. Your box also needs to have a logo for your particular game that is eye catching and lets people know what they will be learning while playing.

Typing Tournament

Typing Tournament is underway, and students from Years 2-6 have been busy learning the finer skills of touch typing. TCC believe that this is a great skill, which will be beneficial for them in the future.

Secondary Subject Selection Evening

This is an evening for all students, parents and carers to attend to obtain information on the selection of elective subjects. Our teachers get to 'show off' their subject areas and get the students excited about the opportunities available to them. All Secondary students and their families from Years 8 to 10 were encouraged to attend.

Crazy Crafters

On Fridays, we have a Craft Club running at lunchtime in the ISC for Year 6 students, High School students and Teachers. This club is run by an ex student, Maitrix Sumpner-Johnston and Mrs Ruth Sumpner.

At the moment, they are busy making felted juggling balls, crochet chains and granny squares.

It is on every Friday at lunch, and run alongside Mrs Sage’s High School STEM club.

Kindergarten 2019 Information Evening

We recently held our Kindergarten for 2019 Information Evening. Parents and carers received information on how the learning journey into big school starts for their precious little ones. Mr Coleman spoke about what it means to be a Christian school and parents met some of our teachers. We enjoyed a supper afterwards with lots of Tim-Tams!!! We are looking forward to all our new Kindy students starting in 2019.
