Principal Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

It has been a busy and productive week at McGuire College!

Last Thursday and Friday our Year 12 students took part in a two-day Study Skills Camp at La Trobe University, Shepparton campus. The motivation, study skills and team building program was supported by LaTrobe and GoTAFE. 

Teachers and students were able to build strong bonds and feedback received from students was that they have gained new skills to assist them to be successful throughout 2019 and beyond. Thank you to the Senior Team, who supported this work, we know this opportunity will support our Year 12s as they work throughout the year.

Year 7 Welcome BBQ:

On Wednesday evening the College hosted a BBQ for our Year 7 families to welcome them to McGuire.  We had a fabulous turn out with over 100 families attending on the evening. Families and students engaged in some friendly and relaxed conversations with their teachers and were entertained by the McGuire College school band.  Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Students and staff  welcomed the Greater Shepparton College Principal Genevieve Simson to McGuire College last Friday morning – Genevieve is looking forward to spending time with each of the four secondary schools each week.  The five Principals, inclusive of Genevieve and the four current secondary school Principals have committed to working together each week as we begin planning for our new school.  We look forward to sharing updates of the project as we progress.

This year staff teams from across the four Greater Shepparton Colleges will be engaging in professional development to support student engagement and wellbeing. In today’s changing and complex world, many secondary school students encounter daily challenges that can impact their success at school. These can range from ongoing stress and a lack of family support to a specific traumatic event, because of this our schools need specialised strategies to address student needs for healing, growth, and achievement. Teaching and support staff teams will engage in training in The Berry Street Education Model which provides curriculum and strategies to engage the most challenging students. This education initiative is based on proven positive education, trauma-informed and wellbeing practices that enable students’ academic and personal growth. The model is unique because it educates schools and their leaders to reinforce and sustain cognitive and behavioural change, thereby re-engaging young people in learning and progressing their academic achievement. We look forward to sharing more as we progress.
