Social and Emotional Learning

Dear Families

New research indicates that as the digital economy transforms workplaces, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills which include collaboration, communication and emotional literacy will be more important than ever as traditional roles are mechanised.

It is expected that more than half of the children entering school now are expected to work in jobs that don't yet exist.

Social and Emotional Learning skills involve abilities that sit outside of the core skills of reading, writing and mathematics.  Interestingly, of the 16 skills being promoted as important for the 21st Century, 12 involve SEL.

In the classroom, SEL skills are developed through cooperative group work, discussions, peer-to-peer teaching, problem-solving and group reflection.

We also use project and inquiry-based learning to develop our student's ability to think critically, use technology and solve problems.

Outside the classroom, parents and caregivers can encourage children to develop SEL skills by remaining engaged in their child’s education and providing a safe and nurturing environment.

Extracurricular activities such as sports, music and scouting can also help to teach children SEL skills.

We ensure that we explicitly teach our students to foster the development of their social and emotional skills.  The teaching of these skills has remained a high priority, particularly as our students have returned to onsite learning.

If you have concerns or questions about your child's learning or the teaching of SEL at St. Anthony's please do not hesitate to get in touch.

best wishes,
