From our Assistant Principal

Back at school, yay!!!

It has been wonderful this week seeing the smiling faces of our students back at school. They have all settled in so well and all of our staff are also happy to be back.

Promoting Independence

The main task for parents is to raise responsible, independent children – this can be tough because our natural instinct is to care for and nurture them, especially in these COVID times. However it is important that children are given responsibility at home. Training for independence starts at a young age. Encouraging independence is a great way to develop self-confidence in children. When we teach children to do things for themselves we demonstrate our faith in them and send a powerful message that they are capable. Our actions definitely speak louder than our words.

Some suggestions-

  • Encourage children to do routine jobs at home – cleaning the dishes, packing their own school bags
  • When children can tell the time, teach them to set an alarm so they get themselves up and get organised for school
  • Be alert to a child’s readiness to do things for themselves. Ask yourself “Am I doing something for them that they are capable of doing for themselves?”

The most effective way to promote responsibility in children is to give them responsibility.

End of the school day

Now that we are all back to onsite learning, please remember that the school day does not finish until 3.30pm.  Parents asking to pick children up between 3 and 3.30pm disrupt classes and impact office staff at a very busy time.  Unless there is specific student need, please arrange to meet your child/ren after school as 'normal'.
