Family Learning Centre Update
November 2020
What’s New in the ELC/Kindergarten?
Welcome to our new children; Hayden and Nathan. Welcome back Emma, Faila and Chudier!
We are so happily busy this term with lots of Special events for our centre.
Our Integrated Learning Approach at the Family Learning Centre
We are looking at colours and shapes for the next few weeks. We are learning all the colours of the rainbow in our pre-kinder room, mixing colours and exploring the primary colours in our babies and toddlers rooms. Learning about significant colours for NAIDOC Week and face painting in our kinder rooms.
NAIDOC Week
The 2020 theme of NAIDOC Week is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be'. With this in mind, we will look at embracing and celebrating the concept of Connection to Country and bush food. We have made Damper, learned about Dilly Bags and painted our faces with symbols that we learned from the Wadawurrung People. Our favourite is the Ochre Hunter! Finn’s mum Shantelle helped us with our symbols and taught us some Wadawurrung words Nyatne (thank you) and Narree-yeek (My name is).
Sustainability Day
To celebrate Sustainability Day, we decorated milk cartons from the Early Learning Centre and then planted tomatoes in them. We will bring them home to plant in our gardens at home at the end of the year!
Remembrance Day
We learned about the symbol of the Poppy for Remembrance Day in our pre-Kinder room. We were very careful as we passed a poppy around the circle and then had our moment of silence. In the Kinder rooms we made wreaths for Remembrance Day.

Making RAINBOWS @ the Family Learning Centre
A symbol of peace and hope rainbows often appear when the sun follows a heavy rainfall. They also remind us that there is hope and light to follow any storm.
Why not “SING A RAINBOW” with hey dee ho educational services
Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue - I can sing a Rainbow. Sing a Rainbow. Sing a Rainbow too.
Learning to sing and sign your colours with hey dee ho is fun.
Thanks Hey dee Ho J
MAKERS CORNER – Learning colors! Low Cost play ideas with your child
MAKE a COLLAGE WITH COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW is a great way to talk and teach colours
Even the youngest family members can get creative making a rainbow collage activity. Collage is a simple craft activity that involves pasting items like shapes, colors, ribbons, and so on from paper, tissues, cloth or photographs onto a sheet of paper.
Making a collage helps your child build fine motor skills. It’s also a fun way to encourage your child’s awareness of colours. Talking with your child about his collage helps his language development too.
Checkout the Raising Children Network website and link for lots of ideas and information for parents.
Adapting collage for children of different ages
Your younger child might manage to stick on only a few items to make a collage. They may not be able to use scissors, and need help with glue. Praise all their efforts. Their attention span might be short, so put everything away when they look like they've had enough.
Many well-known artists use collage. Why not search online for images of collage artworks to inspire your older child?
Wishing good health, smiles and happiness to you and your families and happy rainbows to you all
