November 2020
What a busy and productive few weeks the years 3-6 students have had!
From reading and writing about potions to creating some themselves, it has certainly been a magical time in 3-6 world!
A Community of Readers and Writers
Over the past few weeks the 3-6 students have continued their focus on annotating texts to help with comprehension. Across all campuses we have seen an improvement in students' ability to discuss the texts they are reading and to find answers to key questions. This skill will continue to be practised as students begin to move into “book clubs”.
This is an exciting time for our students, as they peruse a variety of novels, then select one that interests them to read over the next few weeks. Book clubs give students exposure to new authors and genres as well the opportunity to practice speaking and listening skills when regularly meeting with their book club group to discuss their text.
In writing, the 3-6 students have been working on creating exciting narratives with a magical theme.
We have been working on developing interesting characters, then considering the types of situations these characters might find themselves in and problems that may arise for those characters. By developing character profiles, and really getting to know the characters, students are able to create more interesting narrative stories.
What’s the Problem?
From how much change to receive, to finding percentages, maths is full of problems that the mathematicians in 3-6 must try and solve. The 3-6 students have been working on a variety of math skills including financial maths, fractions, decimals and percentages, patterns and algebra, volume and capacity and probability.
Isn’t that just blowing things up? Our 3-6 students would be able to tell you that there’s more to chemical science than that! Through a range of fun, hands on experiments, students have been exploring matter and the properties and behaviours of solids, liquids and gases.
We were lucky enough to have a WebEx incursion run by Mad About Science where the students were able to participate in a range of experiments and have all their burning questions answered by a scientist.
