Term 4 - Mathematics Snap Shot
Students in 1/2 started the Term learning about division (sharing). Division is a tricky topic as not all things can be divided equally. We have learned that when groups cannot be divided equally we have "left overs". The students were given lots of opportunities to investigate how they effectively share collections using "hands on" materials. They were then able to more formally record their mathematical thinking in a variety of ways.
We then moved into Fractions. This built on the content from our Division unit. We have learnt to represent and model halves, quarters and eighths, using concrete materials, diagrams and symbols. We now know that halves are 2 equal parts of a whole object or group, quarters are 4 equal parts of a whole object or group and eighths are 8 equal parts of a whole object or group. We discussed ways we use fractions in our everyday lives.
