Our fantastic Year 3-6 students have had a quiet few weeks - mostly due to the weather! We have had some postponements of events, but they will happen soon! The Athletics Carnival is on this Friday which we are all excited about.

Our behaviour focus this fortnight is 'Use Appropriate Language' - which is important across all aspects of school life. Every single person wants to be spoken to with respect, adults, and children alike, so it's important to keep this in mind every day here at school. It will help us make friends and enjoy our learning.

On Wednesday 15 June 2022, our Year 5 and Year 6 students (and a few Year 4 fill-ins) went over to Young for the annual Mortimer Shield in Rugby League and League Tag. The children had a fantastic day in relative sunshine, and the girls racked up six tries across the day, with Zac scoring the boys' only try and captain Josh converting from near the sideline. Best players on the day were Emily for the girls and Peter for the boys.

An enjoyable day had by all, and Mr Corcoran and I were proud teachers/coaches too.

4/5 Class

Year 4/5 are continuing to work hard in all key learning areas. We have started a writing unit on persuasive texts and are strengthening our arguments with high modality words. Our vocabulary is continuing to expand, and we are using these interesting words to enhance the quality of our sentences. On Thursday it was Ava's birthday, and we shared her cake in the morning session. We decided to change our persuasive writing topic in the morning to kids should or shouldn't eat cake for breakfast. Here are a few persuasive paragraphs written by 4/5 students.

We are always on the search for good fit books, with a lot of students choosing to read Anh Do and the Wings of Fire texts. Historical texts are also popular at the moment with some students reading about World War II and the Kokoda track. In mathematics, we continue to work on the basics like times tables, and formal algorithms. We are also looking at angles, symmetry, 2D and 3D space. Cooking lessons with Mrs Golden are one of our favourite lessons each fortnight, last week we made Chicken Schnitzel Caesar Wraps.

5/6 Class

The 5/6 class has welcomed Miss Stacie Wales from Charles Sturt University for Weeks 6-9 this term. Miss Wales is in her third-year practical experience, and she is beginning to teach full lessons and days in our classroom. We are really lucky to have her in our class, as she is teaching the class many new and exciting things - with a lot of the students saying they like Miss Wales' mathematics lessons a lot more than mine! I'll have to borrow a few ideas from Miss Wales. We hope she can come back and teach here at Boorowa Central School when she finishes her study in a couple of years.

In mathematics, we have finished our focus on fractions, decimals and percentages - and have moved onto 2D space and geometry. We only have to remember a few key rules for geometry and it's simple! In English, we have finished our book The Kingdom Revealed and have begun a unit of work on Muster Dogs - the ABC documentary. We will be writing a lot of non-fiction texts for this unit (reports, plans, procedures and letters). In PDHPE, we have begun learning about drugs and harmful substances. We are being very mature when discussing this content and want to focus on the health impacts of poor choices.

I have read every single student report from Year 3 - Year 6 this week. I'm always impressed by achievement but seeing all of the effort that students put into their learning and their behaviour makes me a happy and proud member of our school. You don't always have to be the best - you have to have a go and be kind. Good things happen to good people - regardless of natural ability.

As always, every student must be reading for 30 minutes per night and practising their times tables 0-12x every day. This is ESSENTIAL for successful progress to secondary school.

Infants

Our Infants have been extremely excited this week with all of us looking forward to taking part in the Colour Run and Athletics Carnival – such highly anticipated events especially the fourth time round! We hope many of our family and friends are able to come and watch and cheer us on, on the day.

Student reports are being finalised this week and will be distributed to families at the end of the term. Early next term we will be holding parent-teacher interviews, details of which will be available shortly. Western Region PSSA Cross Country

On Wednesday 15 June 2022, Lilah Roffey, Annie Smith and Patch Smith travelled to Geurie to take part in the Western Region PSSA Cross Country event. All three students ran great races, representing our school and Cowra District with pride, and enjoyed the day out in the sun. Congratulations to them all.

K/1

This fortnight, many of our students have taken on the role of teacher in our class and have had a lot of fun doing so – for the teacher and the class! Mr Trevellian, Miss Armour, Mr Merriman, Miss Penrose and Miss Brown have been running their students through the bank of words, while others have helped practice sounds and played matching games in small groups. These peer-led activities are great for building confidence and consolidating skills with a bit of fun at the same time.

Our students also enjoyed showing off their writing and spelling to other classes. Older sisters, brothers, cousins, and friends were extremely impressed with the writing and reading of our K/1 students when we visited Years 1/2 and 2/3!

In mathematics, we have been exploring mass and have been ‘hefting’ to determine if objects have a greater or lesser mass. We discovered that things that are bigger aren’t always heavier, which was quite the light bulb moment for many! We have also been exploring other measurement concepts and have enjoyed comparing the size of our hands and feet and using these to measure other objects.

Stage 4 science class were given an assessment task to build a 3D model of a planet, moon, or comet of their choice from our solar system. They could make the model out of any medium they liked. They also had to complete a factsheet to accompany the 3D model with information about their chosen planet, moon, or comet.

They certainly did deliver, many of the students are impressed with their models and are happy to show them off around the school.

University of Wollongong Discovery Day

Year 12 had a fantastic day on their University of Wollongong Discovery Day, where they were able to experience university life. They attended a variety of lectures on topics of their choice including marine science, nutrition and dietetics, exercise and rehabilitation, physical health education, and a tour of the university.

It has given them all lots of possibilities to think about for their paths post school.

Stage 5 Mathematics Similar Triangles Project

Recently Stage 5 mathematics students were given the challenge of creating a picture of a 'noun' out of a set of similar triangles. The following are some examples of students who put a lot of effort into the task and created some excellent posters.
