Building Community - Tiny Town/Wellbeing Week/House Points

Year 1 Students Building Tiny Towns

Year 1 students have been learning about community.  Students explored the different types of buildings in the Ivanhoe Community. They worked to collaboratively both with their families and peers to plan, design and construct their own 'Tiny Towns'.  They were so proud of their achievements they invited their families in to showcase their work.

Year 1 classrooms were open today from 8.45 am to allow families to come in and visit.  It was fabulous to recreate our connections with extended families and the community.  Families were so impressed with our aspiring architects, engineers and designers!

Wellbeing Week

This week has been wellbeing week at IPS.  Students across the school have been involved in many different activities with a wellbeing focus.  Pictures below show sensory jars that 1D made.  They added gems, beads and glitter to jars and topped up with water.   Students in 1D have found that they are proving to be a great tool to help them calm when they are worried or nervous. They simply watch the colours gently move and change as they begin to calm and feel happier.

Students in 3J made mini journals to record their feelings and gratitude each day. They also did a different breathing activity daily. The pictures below show the journals and Best Belly Buddies breathing activity with soft toys.

Year 6 students  took part in a wellbeing transition activity.  A panel of Year 10 work experience students shared their experiences of high school life and practical tips for everyday routines.

Our Smiling Mind Champion organised the activity and set up 12 scenario cards about typical high school situations and placed them around the Grade 6 learning area where students were asked to predict what they might do in if they were faced with each scenario.

Here is an example scenario the students were presented with :

  • You have been given several pieces of homework to complete and you are not sure you are going to get them all done on time....
  • Who can you talk to?
  • How can you manage your time out of school?
  • What are homework clubs?

After much peer discussion,  there was a  Q and A forum and the  Year 10 students shared what generally happens in those typical  high  school scenarios.

All the students felt comfortable in asking questions and were engaged with the task. They felt less  anxious about their future move to high school  and the year 10 students were very happy to provide this support.

A successful session!
