This Monday, August 15, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Assumption signals the end of Mary's earthly life and marks her journey to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. When Mary died, her body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son. It is this great love that Jesus showed for his mother that we celebrate at the Feast of the Assumption

Mary is very special because she was chosen by God to be the mother

of God’s son, Jesus. And Mary said YES to all that God asked of her.

When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth she sang a special song praising God. She praised God for showing mercy, for lifting up those who are poor and humble, for filling those who are hungry with good things to eat.

This song of praise shows us that God turns everything on its head. God does not think that the rich and powerful, kings and princes, CEOs and presidents are the most important.

Instead God has a special love for those who are poor and humble. Those who might not have enough to eat. Those who might be ignored or outcast.

Mary was a very humble, poor girl. But she was chosen to be the mother of God’s son, Jesus. God did not choose a princess, someone who was already rich and powerful. And as God loves those who are humble, poor, lowly, and outcast, we are also called to love as God loves.

We can help our world to look more like Mary’s song of praise. We can help make sure we listen to those who are poor and dejected and work together with them to make the world a fairer place.

We can play our part in making sure that all people have enough food to eat – that anyone who is hungry is filled with good things.

We can share what we have and not get too proud. We can care for our earth so that all people can enjoy it, now and in the future.

On Monday the students in Years 4-6 will be attending Mass at 9.15 to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption as it is a Holy Day of Obligation. The students in Years P-3 will be participating in a Prayer Service in their class to celebrate this feast day.

This week let us all try to remember to praise God for the wonderful

things that he has done and given to us.

And let us do what we can to love those who are poor, lonely, sad or afraid,

so that the world might look more like Mary’s wonderful song of praise.

God of love,

may we live as your faithful and trusting disciples.

We pray for the strength and courage we need

to be hope-filled and generous people,

knowing that you are with us on our journey.

Help us be more like Mary and say ‘YES’

to your will.

Last Monday we celebrated the feast of our First Australian Saint, Saint Mary of the Cross, Mary MacKillop.

Classes prayed with their buddies then spent time together working on a variety of activities related to Mary MacKillop. We all enjoyed a special Sushi Lunch to commemorate this special day.
