PE and Health
The last two weeks in Health we have continued to explore and develop a great understanding and awareness of Gender and Identity.
βThe early school years are a critical time to challenge stereotypes based on gender and other differences. It is useful to do explicit work with children to acknowledge, explore and celebrate diverse identities. This helps them realise that their likes and dislikes do not have to be limited by their gender or any other characteristics and that their preferences and interest can change and evolve over time.β (Respectful Relationships)
Students have had some great discussions about their interests, similarities and differences with their classmates and friends.
Β
In PE, students have been developing their skills in Athletics with a focus on running, jumping and throwing. Students have developed their understanding of the techniques required to run faster, jump further and throw longer. They have also worked in small teams to run relay races using a baton. Students have to synergise and run hard for their team as well as coordinate the baton change successfully. Students have learnt the skills for long jump and the hop, step and jump for triple jump and finally the technique required for shot put and discus.

Interschool Sports
Division Teeball
Our mixed teeball team attended the Division competition at Kingston Heath Reserve on July 29th. We played two pool games with an easy win in game one and a very intense and exciting game in the second game to decide which school would advance to the final. It came down to the last innings and we got the win 9-3. The team advanced to the final and it was an easy win for the team, resulting in Division champions.
With this result, the team now moves forward to Regional finals, which will be played at Mornington Baseball Club on Tuesday 16th August. We wish our team all the best for this competition.

District Basketball
On Monday 1st August, a number of grade 4-6 students participated in the district Basketball Competition. Each team played 8 games during the day, and although we werenβt able to manage a win, it was great to see how much fun our boys and girls had on the day. Well done to everyone for giving it their best efforts.

Culture StudiesΒ
Β
Last week we continued to investigate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture, focusing on bush food / bush tucker, hunting and medicines which all can be found from the land. Students were given the opportunity to scrunch up a eucalyptus leaf in their hands to smell the fragrance of the eucalyptus. This allowed students to understand that the leaf can be used for medicine, to help with a cold and if it is put into boiling water and inhaled through their nose, this will help clear any congestion.Β
Β
Foundation and year 1/2 students were able to sort and categorise images of various foods and resources from the land.
Β
Year 3/4 and 5/6 students were able to compare, using a Venn diagram, food eaten by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and themselves.Β
Β
All students were given the opportunity to make and taste damper/ bush bread, using only flour and water. Students were able to understand that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would crush a variety of native seeds, and sometimes nuts and roots, to make the flour, then they would mix water to make a dough, baking it in the coals of a fire. The bread is high in protein and carbohydrate and helped form part of a balanced traditional diet.Β

The prep classes have begun their βBeat Detectiveβ Unit. They are learning about the beat in music and how beat is different to rhythm. All other year levels have been learning about Indigenous Australian Music. They have learnt how both body percussion and untuned percussion instruments can be used to imitate environmental sounds.
Β
The Year 1/2βsΒ have learnt to sing the songs βBunjil the Eagleβ and βInanay Capuanaβ and the 3/4βs have learnt βBunjil the Eagleβ and the traditional Torres Straight Islander song βSesse eyre Sesse eyreβ which is about a kingfisher bird diving into the water to catch fish. They have also been busy creating their own rainsticks. They will now explore how the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people used song, stories and dances to help create maps of the land also known as Songlines.Β
Β
The Year 5/6 class have been decoratingΒ and learning how to play their own didgeridoos. These are made of cardboard rolls which have been dipped in beeswax to make the mouthpieces. They have learnt some of the basics of didgeridoo playing including breathing techniques, holding position and to make a buzzing sound with their lips. They have had a lot of fun exploring how to make different sounds and have learnt that making a clear, sustained tone is actually very difficult and requires a lot of practise!
