Humanities

Over the past few months in the Humanities Learning Area we have seen some great work from students and even enjoyed the opportunity of extending learning beyond the classroom.

Connections has newly become a Humanities elective in 2022. In this subject the learning is centred on a variety of life skills and links to different VCE subject pathways. In Term 1, students studied Tools for Success and submitted a snapshot of their future successful life. In Term 2, students made connections to subjects such as Philosophy, History, Psychology and Science and completed an ethical assessment of an historical scientific experiment of their choice. All of this work culminated in students visiting the city in June taking part in a Big Issue workshop and a Graffiti Tour of Melbourne’s laneways. Thank you to Ms Ghiotti and Mr Alcantara for taking our Year 9’s out for the day.

Our Unit 3/4 Legal Studies students also had the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom in July as they took part in the Melbourne Legal Tour. Our students went on a tour of the Victorian Parliament in which they got to meet Matthew Bach a member of the Legislative Council and participate in a law-making role play. Afterwards, the class went on a tour of Melbourne’s Legal Precinct visiting the Supreme Court of Victoria and the County Court. Thank you to Ms Papadopoulos for accompanying the class on this excursion.

Finally, as a faculty we are farewelling Mrs Rosa who leaves us to go on maternity leave at the start of August. Mrs Rosa has made great contributions to both the Humanities and English faculties and we wish Mrs Rosa all the best as her family grows. We also wish to thank Mrs Tzaikou for her years of service to the Blackburn High School community and wish her the best moving forward.

The next few months promise to be busy for the Humanities Learning Area. I would encourage all students to continue to seek out and engage with our subjects and extra-curricular opportunities.
