Maths and Religion

SLC has been learning how to calculate percentages of quantities. We learned a cool new strategy to easily work out these percentages of quantities. The strategy is that when we have a percentage to work out like 30% of 40 we should first make it 30/100 because that is the equivalent fraction of 30% and 40/1 as this is our whole number. We then cross out the two zeros in 100 and we have to do the same to the top, where we cross out the zero in 30 and the zero in 40 to leave us with 3 and 4. We then look at our question being 3 of 4 and we know that ‘of’ means multiply so the question is now 3x4. Since we have been practising our times tables that will give us an answer of 12. Which is the answer to the first question being 30% of 40. This hack has given the students more confidence and fluency when we face problems like these in the future.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit is an important part of the Sacrament of Confirmation as we reflect on what gifts we show towards others and help us to know what gifts we should try to show in the future. These gifts include:

Knowledge: To know how to be in good relationships with God, with myself and other people.

Piety: To respect and care for myself, other people and all things in our world.

Understanding: To be understanding of others, to be able to feel with them, to be empathetic.

Fortitude: To be able to stand up for what I believe in, to stand up for myself and others, to do what is right even if it’s hard.

Wisdom: To be able to learn from whatever happens to me; to become a better person even when hard things happen to me.

Counsel: To be able to choose what is good and true.

Fear of the Lord: To notice all the good things God does for me, to know how God is with me in the special people who love me and in all that is beautiful in our world.

Knowing this, SLC created gifts from a net and we wrote what gift or gifts apply to us and why. We stuck these into our presents in which we will open at the end of the term to remind us to use these gifts.

SLC has been participating in a range of brain breaks to get us up and active and also to more positive about having to do remotely learning. We all know we can get a little caught up in all the negative news, SLC is trying to be positive and have fun during online learning. In one particular brain break we had to balance books on our heads and see who could balance the most books with one foot off the ground. Henry managed to get 17 writing books on his head which we all thought was unreal. We all had a laugh because a lot of us were falling over and books were going everywhere.

We are so looking forward to having everybody back onsite hopefully real soon. Stay safe.

Kind Regards,
