Maths, Writing, Show and Share and Inquiry
Last week the Prep class has welcomed Juliette into our room. Juliette is currently trialing at St Bridget's with her brother Orlando who is in JLC. Everyone has been very excited to welcome Juliette.
In Maths, we have been learning about sharing. We have learnt about equal and unequal shares. If the shares are unequal we can add more so they are all the same. We shared counters amongst our family so that everyone had an equal amount. When everyone has an equal amount, that is fair.
During Inquiry, we learnt about rolling. We had to predict if some objects would stick, slide or roll. We found out that a lump of playdoh would stick, and a block would slide but if we rolled the playdoh into a ball it would roll. We tested different balls: a tennis ball, a playdoh ball, some aluminum foil rolled into a ball and a marble. We tipped a table up to make a ramp. Which do you think rolled the fastest?
One of our Prep students learning remotely from home wrote about her experiment and results.
Also last week, we have been learning about 3D shapes. So far we have constructed a cube and a cylinder.
As the Preps continue with report writing, we have made koalas, sharks, possums, spiders and clownfish.
We now know that koalas are marsupials and not bears. They have fur, are warm-blooded, are born live and they have a pouch. We made our koalas and sat them in a eucalyptus tree because that is all they eat. Eucalyptus trees are gum trees.
In Show and Share recently we did a ‘Who am I?’ We shared facts about an animal and the class had to guess which animal we were describing. They were all excellent.
Last week we had to bring something we had made out of other materials. The children made a fabulous robot, car, bouquet of flowers.
In Inquiry this term, our students have been on a journey of discovery as they are immersed in the properties and uses of different materials, such as paper, Playdoh, foil, cardboard and wood. The students were able to use different materials to construct designed solutions. They have experimented with building techniques as they made an aluminum foil boat, a paper bridge and a popsicle box.
