Mr Luke Caplick

It’s great to have a weekend sport back! After Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk’s announcement last Wednesday, we had all hands on deck to get sport up and running last weekend. We would like to thank John Lambourne, Mitch Reid, Corey Lucas, Michael Connolly and Andrew Ward for their collective efforts in making this happen with such short notice. I would also like to thank the coaches who were very supportive in ensuring the boys were their priority in getting back out on the court/field. I have been reminded by a few coaches that the conditions out on the bay last weekend were perfect for fishing but every single coach dropped their plans to be at their respective sports fixtures on Saturday to support our boys. I know the boys appreciate the sacrifices made by so many and witnessing them play tennis, basketball and rugby league on a warm winter’s day reminded us all of the privilege we have in representing the College in AIC sport. If there’s anything we’ve learnt from the pandemic, it is to never take things like playing sport for granted. Despite a couple of heartbreaking results on Saturday, our boys all recognised how lucky they were to be on the court/ field. We only have to look across the border to our neighbouring states to be reminded of how lucky we are.

Our Track and Field squad continues to work hard at training. It has been extremely pleasing to see the level of interest amongst the College in our Track and Field Program. Thanks to Jon Fitzgerald and Rob Martin who continue to drive this program, aspiring to build on our success over the past six years. As always, the T&F coaches are willing to negotiate alternative/specialised training schedules for those who do have a lot on their plate. Students must contact Mr Fitzgerald if they are unable to attend a particular training session.

We make no apologies for setting the bar high for our students. In our AIC sports competition, premierships and the T&F championship are still up for grabs. We would hope that our boys are keen and eager to contest them. Despite the lockdown interruptions, our boys have continued to prepare well for our Term 3 sports.  There is no pressure on any student or any team to win. The only expectation we have is that our boys give 100% at training and on game day and that they conduct themselves as Marist men both on and off the court/ field each week. Maintaining and building school pride and a positive culture is important to us; we ask all students to continue to do their part for the remainder of the year in order for MCA to perform at its best.

Iona College will present some enormous challenges for us this weekend across all sports. Best wishes go to all AIC teams this week as we strive to be our best in our Round 5 fixtures. We always know Iona are up for a battle in every sport and we must come prepared to beat them in every area of the game. Good luck boys!

For students looking at participating in the Bridge to Brisbane fun run on Sunday 7 November, you can now select Marist College Ashgrove as your team when registering for the event.

Rugby League

In order to maintain a certain level of professionalism with the official duties on weekends, we have been asked by the NRL to supply one accredited touch judge for every Rugby League game we play (exception 1st XIII). If there are any students or parents who are able to assist in providing performing this duty please let me know by sending an email to caplickl@marash.qld.edu.au with your availability. This week the NRL will be ensuring touch judges are accredited. Any assistance from our parents or students in this regard would be greatly appreciated. All that is required between now and Friday is to enrol and complete the free course via the following link: AIC School Competition.

When the course is complete participants receive an email confirmation as proof or a certificate is available (within 24 hours) to download following course completion. Please let me know if you can help out with this to ensure a better experience for all at our Rugby League fixtures.

Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward, Head Tennis Coach

What an eventful week we had with the announcement of sport recommencing on Thursday, just 2 days before we were due to take the courts against a slick Padua team. The mad rush to find players as we had the largest number of non-available players we have ever had.

I would like to thank Mr Caplick and the three Year 11 boys he found to fill in for the match last Saturday. We took to the courts being able to fill all of our 17 teams. Marist boys winning 14 of the 17 matches.

The 1st IV, unfortunately, going down 3-5 but were under the pump by the Padua number 1 player who played extremely well and had a little more firepower than our boys could handle. Congratulations to Jakub Bennett, winning his first singles match of the season. We will regroup and get ready for Iona this weekend which will be a lot harder team across all year levels. Great numbers at training boys and let's finish the season strongly and keep improving as a team and club. We have great talent coming through the ranks, and I am excited to continue to work with a lot of you next term and keep building on our future together.
