What a busy time in PE and Sport it has been! The term is ticking away very quickly and before we know it, it will be the first round of the AFL, the Suncorp Netball season will begin and many cricket and basketball seasons will come to an end. It is also the time when Little Aths draws to a close and Surf Lifesavers and Triathletes get to have a rest through the winter. We are so lucky to have such a range of sports to follow, support and play in Australia. A sport which we have been learning about in PE lessons this week is Lacrosse and thanks to the Camberwell Lacrosse Club, we have been able to offer students the experience of trying this sport. They have volunteered their time to help us all learn a bit more about this sport; teaching us the skills of cradling, passing, throwing and scooping the ball up. The photos say it all - the smiles, the cheering and the laughter could be heard from the oval every lesson! If you are interested in trying more Lacrosse out, please see the flyer attached.

Division Swimming:

Congratulations again to the team of students who represented St Cecilia’s at the District Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 22nd February. On the day, three students qualified for the Division Carnival which is held on Wednesday 8th March. Amelie (Backstroke) Eliza (breastroke) and Jake (butterfly) swam incredibly well!! Wonderful experience and all supported each other well. Jake has progressed to the eastern metro final on March 24th in the butterfly by coming 2nd. Congratulations!

District Tennis:

Congratulations to Joshua Bolton and Sam Judd, Year 6, who were nominated and selected to play in the Glen Iris District Tennis Day. They both played admirably, winning many hard points, fighting right to the end! On the day, Sam won third place and Josh took out the competition, qualifying for the Divisions. He goes into the Division Tournament seeded 2nd which is a brilliant achievement win or lose on the day. Playing in these competitions is not an easy feat; you can only be nominated if you are of a very high standard. Both Josh and Sam represented St Cecilia’s with pride and we are so proud of them both. Super effort!

Foundation PMP:

The Foundations students have been learning about types of movement, controlling objects and different locomotive movements to get from one place to another. They have been catching balls, throwing bean bags, balancing themselves and objects, and even jumping in patterns testing out their memory as well as their motor skills. They've become experts at doing their own shoes and socks which as we keep telling them, is the hardest part of their days! Thank you to the parents who have kindly volunteered their time to come and help, as well as a huge thank you to the Year 6 Leaders for their help setting up, running and packing up of the sessions. Practising catching, throwing, tying laces, skipping and all of those skills that older students and adults take for granted are great things that can easily be reinforced at home. We look forward to showing off our amazing skills throughout the year.

Running Club and Cross Country:

With the District Cross Country being held in Term 2, it is with great excitement that we can confirm the House Cross Country to be held at Nettleton Park on the 2nd of May. Very soon we will begin Running Club again; for safety reasons we are waiting for the majority of the building works to be done so we have a clear and safe path to run on. It will begin later this term and will involve both running games and longer distance running to build up our stamina. The Cross Country race is competed at two distances; 2km for 9/10s and 3km for 11/12s. We will build up our distances over the next few months in preparation for the Cross Country event. The first session for Running Club will commence on Tuesday the 21st March at 7:50am and will run for 40 mins. There will be sign ups distributed so please keep an eye out for further information. Parents are welcome to join us running for the session - if you come along, be sure to wear your sneakers as you will be coaxed into running! Parents who have a particular interest or expertise in running and would like to assist, please email kaldcroft@scgleniris.catholic.edu.au
