Year 9/10 Outdoor Ed Snorkelling

A Student Reflection

On Monday 6 March, the Year 9/10 Outdoor Education class headed down to Portsea for a snorkeling session at Pope's Eye. Below is a reflection of a student who went to the snorkelling excursion:

On the 6th of March,  the Years 9 and 10 Outdoor Education class went to Portsea, where we got onto a boat to go to Pope’s eye and Chainman’s hat. Arriving at Portsea there were a lot of nerves, not knowing what to expect. While we put the wetsuits on and got the snorkels and flippers, the adrenaline came through.

Once we hopped in the boat, we were off to Pope’s Eye first. When we arrived at Pope’s Eye, from the top of the water, all that was seen were rocks lined in a semi-circle. But when we entered the water and put our heads down, around the rock was a lot of seaweed but also some truly beautiful fish, all different kinds.

We learned that Pope’s Eye was built to try and protect Melbourne as Melbourne was one of the richest cities in the world back then (but our gun technology was not yet at a high standard). Next, we went to Chinaman’s Hat where there were a large number of seals. They made many sounds and we followed one as it swam around in the water putting its fin up, trying to regulate its body temperature.

At the end of the class, we were back in the boat and made our return to Portsea and to school. This trip was an experience that we will never forget.
