Service Challenge

Service Challenge (7-10) (Repeat)

For our Service Program this year, Secondary students (7-10) have been challenged to keep serving from our hearts and with our talents and gifts, to develop new skills, build good habits, and capitalise on previous service experiences.

In first term the focus is on how we serve at home, the second term focus is on how we can serve at school and the third term focus is on serving in the community and abroad.

For Term 1, the Service Program’s focus is on how we serve in the family. Students at Southern Christian College do this in many ways. In addition to how your son/daughter currently serves at home, they have been challenged to develop one new habit /activity of service. Research tells us it takes four weeks to develop a new habit. Students will have the four remaining weeks of Term 1 to develop this good and helpful habit.

The following is an example:

You may notice that your family rarely goes out for a bush walk or bike ride on the weekend. It would be nice to do, so you consider helping your dad service and fix the family bikes, so that you all have a functional bike to ride. Or, if you are good at planning, maybe you can plan a couple of bush walks for the weekend by researching those walks that are the right length and difficulty, spending a bit of time each day preparing the things that will be needed (snacks, hats, first aid, maps, water, footwear, backpack etc.) These helpful acts of service may be the prompt the family needs to get outdoors on the weekend.

Students have been encouraged to discuss with their parents which good habit or activity is best for them to do. You can help them see what talents and gifts they have to offer,  and you will know what part of your family life needs their act of service.

Other ideas could include:

  • Help a sibling train for a sport team.
  • Take a week to clean their bedroom thoroughly and then keep it tidy for the next 3 weeks.
  • Learn how to help dad give the family cars an oil change.
  • Make your own lunch each day.
  • Teach Pop or Nan how to store and manage their photos on their devices. ...And follow up to make sure they understand and can do it properly.
  • See more here:

There may be something more unique to your family. After discussing it, your son/daughter can let their Home Group teacher know, and get started.

Students have until the end of Term 1 to complete the challenge. Parents are to sign the Service Challenge Form and send back to school with the student.
